Everyday Heroes

Last Tuesday, this posting showed up on the Penrose-St. Francis Facebook page…

Have you heard about your St. Francis ICU nurses, Bethany Monroe and Brett Skattum? They were hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park yesterday when they witnessed another hiker fall at about 11,000 feet. Due to their quick assessments and teamwork, they were able to summon help, including an incredible Flight for Life team from Denver to care for the patient. If it were not for their persistence and quick action and the skills of the Flight for Life pilot, the patient would have had to spend the night on the mountain. Way to go, Bethany and Brett!

I caught up with Bethany and Brett to get more of the story.

“Bethany and I often go hiking together,” said Brett. “She had been to this part of Rocky Mountain National Park earlier and wanted to go back so we went up there on Monday.”

The two had hiked in about four miles, had lunch and spent the afternoon watching wildlife and exploring this beautiful area.

“I was ready to head back but Bethany kept wanting to see ‘one more thing’,” said Brett. “When we were ready to head down, we saw this couple across the lake, and they were acting kind of strange. We were kind of keeping an eye on them when we actually saw the lady fall about 10 ft. and land on her face. Her husband immediately began yelling for help. We were the only other people around so we raced around the lake to help.”

After assesing the situation, Bethany started down the trail for help and Brett began trying to find a place with cell service. He was finally able to get through to 911 and the Park Service for help. At the same time, Bethany had traveled more than a mile down the trail before finding other hikers and cell service.

The two of them spent the next 2 ½ hours caring for the patient as they waited for help, in the form of a rescue crew, to arrive on the scene. It was 4 ½ hours after the accident before the patient was lifted off the mountain in a Flight for Life aircraft.

With the patient safely on her way to the hospital, Bethany and Brett made their way down the mountain with the rescue crew - in the dark. They reached the trailhead more than 10 hours after leaving that morning.

“It was one of those things where everything lines up for a reason,” said Brett. “If we had left the mountain earlier, we wouldn’t have been there to help.”

Bethany added, “And we were the only other people in that area at the time. It was more than a mile down the trail before I encountered another person.”

A special thanks to these two wonderful people for making a difference in the lives of these fellow hikers.

Below is a news clip on the incident from Estes Park Trail-Gazette

Park officials have responded to a quartet of incidents since last Thursday, including two visitors who required helicopter transportation to Denver hospitals. Three of the incidents occurred Monday.

The most serious incident occurred Monday, when a 60-year-old Texas woman suffered traumatic injuries after suffering a 15-foot tumbling fall near Lake of Glass. Rangers received a cell phone call at 3:15 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12, notifying them of the accident. The initial report was that the woman fell at Sky Pond, but rescuers later determined the victim was actually at Lake of Glass, which is 4.5 miles from the Bear Lake trailhead.

The victim was hiking with a family member when she fell. Two bystanders who called rangers stayed and helped care for the woman. Two park rangers, including a park medic, reached the woman with multiple traumatic injuries at 5:19 p.m. Once it was determined that the patient could be moved and had possible serious injuries, rangers began planning for a helicopter operation to evacuate the patient. After moving the patient to a landing area on the east side of Lake of Glass, a St. Anthony Flight for Life helicopter from Summit evacuated her to Denver's St. Anthony Hospital.

New Valet Service

Have you noticed anything different outside the front doors at both Penrose Hospital and St. Francis Medical Center? Those with a keen eye for detail may have noticed that our valet service has different uniforms. It would take a pretty sharp eye to note that even though most of the people are the same,  their  khaki pants are now black and their shirts are a bit different. Towne Park began valet service at our two campuses last Monday, and many of our long-time valet associates joined the new company.

If you didn’t notice the new uniforms, I hope you noticed the new level of service. Towne Park is the nation’s leading valet service company with more than 400 locations across the country. They specialize in first and last impressions with their number one priority being customer service. The service excellence that they are known for in the hotel valet business (Denver Four Seasons, Denver Sheraton) is exactly the service they bring to the hospitals they serve (including the new St. Anthony’s in Denver).

How do they do it? It is actually pretty simple. They greet every customer in a timely manner, use the customer’s name if possible, assist them in unloading items if needed, offer directions to their destination in the building and explain the vehicle retrieval process.

Town Park will also oversee the Critical Care desk at Penrose and the parking shuttle. For those who ride the shuttle, watch for random “Rider Appreciation Days.”

Welcome Towne Park, to the PSF family.

New Falls Program Recognition

The Rewards and Recognition Committee is proud to honor the Penrose Hospital 7th floor Ortho/Neuro Unit as the first recipient at Penrose for the greatest improvement in fall reduction. For the months of April, May and June 2011, the team reduced total number of falls from five in April to only one in May and June.  When Audrey Simpson, Nurse Manager, was notified she “shouted to the rooftop” with joy.  Her excitement was palpable through the phone.

She credits the improvement to many of the interventions currently being implemented. Some of those include early and thorough patient and family education, consistent bed checks, early identification of need for low boy beds and improved hourly rounding. The 7th floor team is also diligent with post fall conferences in which the RN, CNA, Charge RN, Nurse Manager and patient review details of the fall to determine what could have been done differently.  The emphasis for this improvement has truly been a team success with contributions not only from the nursing staff but from therapy and case management associates as well.

Audrey has special recognition for Chris Williams, RN, who is the team lead for falls on the Unit Council. Her responsibilities include responding to the Fall Committee on actions taken, implementation of new process and a monthly unit meeting dedicated solely to falls. Audrey’s final comments were how proud she was that her team was making a difference and being recognized by others for doing a great job.

Thank You!

A patient note was recently received highlighting the above-and-beyond efforts of the eighth floor Rehab team. “These beautiful people will always hold a special place in my heart” summarizes what one patient recalls from her August stay at Penrose Hospital. While the staff members may have thought they were simply doing their job, their caring and nurturing bedside manner encouraged this patient to work through her “darkest days” and believe that she is “strong enough” for her long road to recovery.

Special recognition was given to five Rehab members: Greg for his energizing spirit, Cindy for her calm support and ability to soothe away fears, Charme for her constant encouragement, Karen for lifting the patient’s spirits with smiles and laughter, and Beryle for his dedication and positivity. The patient wrote that “because of this team, I felt like a friend and part of something larger than myself.”

The letter speaks volumes to how patient care extends further than technical expertise. It reinforces how applying our Core Values of compassion, imagination and respect impacts each individual that comes through our doors. The little things obviously do count. Thank you to the eighth floor Rehab team for giving this patient, and surely others, hope.

Healing Garden

If your car flaunts an ‘I heart Gardening’ sticker – or you secretly wish it did, then you must read on. Penrose Hospital’s employee maintained Healing Garden has a number of upcoming opportunities to get your thumb green, learn a few planting tips, connect with co-workers and enjoy the fresh Colorado air. Utilizing gardens to promote healing can be traced throughout history and are gaining popularity in modern medical establishments due to a heightened focus on providing a comprehensive patient experience. There currently are six such gardens within the Centura Health Systems network.

Opportunities include: Fall clean-up and planting (October) followed by planting in the spring. Both seasons include getting your hands dirty, creating serenity for others and minor repair work as needed.

To get involved, please contact Jane-Allin Cloutte via email: jacloutte@juno.com

Colorado Springs Men Face One-In-Six Risk for Prostate Cancer
Free Screening on September 24 is Crucial to Saving Lives

Too many men don’t know their risk for developing prostate cancer, a disease that currently affects more than two million American men. In fact, according to a recent report, 61 percent of men only know “a little” and an additional 20 percent say they know nothing about prostate health. This knowledge gap is of critical importance given that one in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.

Prostate cancer is nearly 100 percent survivable when detected early, yet nearly 34,000 men are expected to die from the disease this year. As there are often no signs or symptoms of the disease in its earliest stages, screening is crucial to saving lives.

What:  To help encourage men in the Colorado Springs are to get screened, leading cancer programs in our community are offering free prostate cancer screening.

Who: The screening is available to men over the age of 40 who have a family history of prostate cancer or are of African American descent and men 50 and older who haven’t had a prostate exam in the last 12 months.

Where:   Peak Vista Family Health Centers, 225 South Union Blvd

When:  Saturday, September 24

Register:  Registration is required, please call 719-444-CARE

Komen Race for the Cure

Pretty in Pink
On Sept. 11 at Garden of the Gods, 62 PSF team members and 23 ANGEL Network breast cancer survivors donned themselves in pink attire to show support for breast cancer research. The Penrose Cancer Center, Dorcy Cancer Center and Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers joined forces to let women know that we’ve got southern Colorado covered when it comes to breast care. Over 2500 pink and black backpacks stuffed with information on our comprehensive breast care programs were distributed to attendees.

A special thanks to Gail Decker and Carolyn Kalaskie for organizing the walk teams.  We appreciate your participation in the barbecue and root beer float fundraisers to support the cause. Together PSF raised $2754 for the Komen Race for the Cure and the ANGEL Network/Juntas Program raised $1360!

Better Bites

Results from a Penrose-St. Francis associate survey conducted this past spring showed that 83 percent of respondents said they were “likely” or “very likely” to purchase a healthier item in our cafeterias if it was cheaper than the less healthy item.  Beginning in October, the Better Bites program will make it easier and less expensive for you to eat delicious, healthy foods at both Penrose Hospital and St. Francis Medical Center.  One of the healthy items that will be less expensive is the Better Bites Grab n’ Go salad.  This salad will be marked with the Better Bites logo and will be over a dollar cheaper than regular Grab n’ Go salads.  Come visit the kick-off event at SFMC on Oct. 5th from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and at Penrose Hospital on Oct. 6th from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

JDRF Wrap-up

Saturday morning, September 10, was a beautiful day for the JDRF walk. America the Beautiful Park was brimming with walkers and sponsors from around the city. Penrose-St. Francis’ “Cure Connected” T- shirts made a big splash in the sea of walkers. Thanks to your support to Juvenile Diabetes, the walk was a huge success. PSF had about 190 registered walkers and we more than doubled our monetary goal. Way to go PSF team!

The BetterMe Blueprint Distracted Driving Challenge
At Centura Health, we work to prevent injuries before they happen. The Centura Health Trauma System and Injury Prevention Teams diligently partner with our communities to identify preventable injuries and to develop programs that will help keep people safe.

As part of our ongoing efforts to connect with Coloradans, we launched The BetterMe Blueprint Distracted Driving Challenge, a social media initiative developed to help stem the growing tide of distracted driving across the state. The program includes information and resources to educate people of all ages on how to adopt safe driving habits, and it provides great tools that will help you reach out to family and friends about this important issue.

I encourage you to participate in the program and issue the challenge to family and friends. Participants are asked to modify and change their habits over a four-week period and can track their progress on a weekly basis. As additional incentive, there’s a chance to win a $50 gas gift card, and if you complete the four weeks and show you’ve made changes, you have a chance to win a $1,000 gas gift card.
