The Flu ends with You!

Flu season is almost upon us and it is not too soon to think about getting your flu shot. Just last week, CNO Kate McCord and CMO Dr. Oram-Smith got their flu shots.

Did you know that influenza is the ninth leading cause of death? Think about your patients who are at risk, you coworkers and your family members. We encourage you to get your flu shot this year.

Watch for more information about when and where you can get your annual influenza vaccination.

Volunteers - Making a difference

Through a Volunteer Grant, the Penrose Café and Bistro was able to purchase a new espresso machine. Last Thursday, the Café and Bistro hosted a special event for our volunteers to say thank you for making this new piece of equipment possible.

So, the next time you enjoy your favorite cup of coffee from the Café and Bistro, be sure to say thank you to one of our volunteers who helped to make that special drink possible.

Our Magazine Cart Needs Magazines!
We are in need of magazines for our magazine cart.
Please leave magazines that are no more than three or
four months old at the Information Desk or in Volunteer Services.

New Falls Program Recognition

NEW FALLS PROGRAM RECOGNITION

Falls among hospital in-patients are common.  Approximately 30 percent of in-patient falls result in injury, with four to six percent resulting in serious injury. Injuries due to falls also increase health care costs.  Patients who fall and sustain injury are reported to have hospital charges over $4,200 higher than patients who do not fall.  Therefore, prevention of falls in the hospital setting is an important safety and public issue.

With that in mind, the Rewards & Recognition Team will present a quarterly award to the unit showing the most dramatic decrease in falls. The award consists of a double picture frame which will contain a certificate and a picture of the staff enjoying a banana split. Congratulations to 5-N, SFMC for being the first recipient of the award.  Phil Ainsworth, RN, clinical manager, attributes the low number of falls to the nursing staff being very vigilant and aware of what is going on with the patients.  Early interventions are also done with patients to prevent falls.

Congratulations to the 5-N team on a job well done!

Penrose Hospital ED Remodeling Project

Since we announced the remodeling project in the Emergency Dept. at Penrose Hospital in the Pulse last week, we have gotten a variety of questions about the project. Because of those inquiries, I thought we would share some images of what the department will look like when it is complete next spring.

This is a rendering of what the reception counter and waiting room will look like.

This may be a bit hard to interpret but this is a 3-D rendering of the architectural drawings. Note that all patients will enjoy private rooms in the new design.

Remember, this project begins this week with Phase 1 being the construction of the new entrance to the Emergency Department.

What can you do to help?
The construction of the new entrance will impact some of the parking spaces outside the ED that are reserved for patient parking. We would like to ask those associates who park in the lot next to the new Margery Reed Memorial Park (between Human Resources and Finance) to help us by keeping those spaces available for emergency patients. You are welcome to park in the garage or across Jackson St. in the lot adjacent to Pen-North.

Laughter is the best medicine

This is a series of fun stories and jokes to help brighten your day and put a smile on your face.

The Pastor goes knocking on doors to greet his parish. At one home it appears someone is there, but nobody answers. He leaves a card with "Revelation 3:20 on the door. Sunday he gets the card back with Genesis 3:10 written below his citation. Looking up the passage he laughs.
Revelation 3:20 begins "Behold, I stand at the door and knock." Genesis 3:10 reads, "I heard your voice in the garden and I was afraid, for I was naked."
