NICU Celebration
On Aug. 20, more than 250 people gathered on the patio at SFMC for the annual NICU Celebration. Children who have "graduated" from the NICU are invited to bring their families and join us for a picnic. This event is designed for families to reconnect with caregivers and other families who shared their NICU experience.
Everyone enjoyed a great meal, entertainment, tons of prizes and a sunny afternoon.

Some of the families gathered for a group photo.

Sox the Fox meets one of our pet therapy dogs.

The staff were holding babies all afternoon but they didn't seem to mind.

Penrose Hospital ED Remodeling Project
The remodeling project in the Emergency Dept. at Penrose Hospital begins on Sept. 6. This project is expected to last about nine months because they will be working in phases, to eliminate as much disruption to the department as possible.
Phase 1 will be the construction of the new entrance to the Emergency Department. The new entrance is adjacent to the old entrance so the existing entrance will remain open during the construction phase. From there, crews will move inside and work on various parts of the building.
What can you do to help?
The construction of the new entrance will impact some of the parking spaces outside the ED that are reserved for patient parking. We would like to ask those associates who park in the lot next to the new Margery Reed Memorial Park (between Human Resources and Finance) to help us by keeping those spaced available for emergency patients. You are welcome to park across Jackson St. in the lot adjacent to Pen-North or in the garage.
Watch for further updates on this project in future editions of the Pulse. Back to Top

Pro Cycling Challenge
As you probably heard, Centura Health was the offical medical provider for last week's US Pro Cycling Challenge. During the Prologue on Monday, Penrose-St. Francis hosted a booth near the finish line. Attendees registered to win a mountain bike valued at $500, learned about car seat safety and other trauma issues related to cycling and driving.
During the entire week-long event, Centura Health physians and nurses folllowed the riders through the mountains, providing medical care to the riders before, during and after each stage.

PDOC
PDOC (electronic physician documentation) application to be made available to providers on Sept. 12
Centura Health is in the process of transitioning to Electronic Health Records (EHR), an exciting step-by-step change that will benefit our patients and help us to treat them more safely, quickly, and with a higher quality of care. Now we’re elevating our EHR capabilities even more by making an application available to all physicians in MEDITECH.
Physician Documentation (PDOC) refers to physician notes in the electronic health record for inpatients. It has already been piloted by 13 physicians at St. Mary-Corwin, but will be made available to any willing provider within Centura on Sept. 12. This is considered a voluntary go-live of the application. (Note: Mercy physicians will not be able to utilize PDOC at this time.)
This is available to physicians now in preparation for our full Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) implementation. Here are more details about PDOC:
Physician Documentation (PDOC) for Inpatients
• What: An electronic documentation capability in MEDITECH that allows physicians and other credentialed providers to enter progress notes electronically, rather than hand-writing progress notes on paper.
• Why: PDOC will improve legibility of the patient’s record and enable real-time access to a patient’s progress in the chart. It will also help to create an integrated EHR, and will increase physician efficiency.
• When: PDOC will be made available in MEDITECH to providers on Sept. 12, 2011, on a voluntary basis for now. This is an opportunity for providers to experience the benefits of electronic entry and be more prepared when CPOE implementation begins in January 2012.
• Available templates: For now, three templates will be available: Daily Progress Note, Post-Op Progress Note (short form), and Central Line Placement. An additional 30 templates will be created in the coming months.
• Training: Training materials are available online and trainers will be available at each entity. Back to Top

As my final requirement to graduate I am interning at STRIVE, and so far I LOVE it! In my free time I love to be outside, go running, spend time with my family and play with my dogs.I have two dogs, one a black lab and the other a golden retriever, they are my little pride and joys. Right now I am applying to nursing school to receive my Bachelor of Science in Nursing. I am hoping to start an accelerated nursing program next summer/fall.
