Trauma Connected

You probably started to see the look of Centura Connected segue into the first System of Care campaign for trauma and emergency services. It’s the next chapter of the Centura Health story, and a primary differentiator in what sets us apart when it comes to connecting Coloradans to preventive and life-saving care. The campaign is designed to build awareness and credibility for Centura Health as Colorado’s largest trauma care provider and for our own entity to demonstrate our breadth and depth of services as trauma leaders in our communities and service areas. Similar to the launch of the Connected campaign, you may hear Centura on the radio, see ads in print or on billboards, as well as online and in social media and in news stories.

Although this campaign is designed to convey the strength of our network, it’s rooted in prevention – the best trauma care of all – and Centura Health’s commitment to providing our communities and our clinical partners with ongoing education. The work we’re doing continues to support a proactive approach to the health and wellbeing of Coloradans. And together, with our associates, physicians and EMS partners, it’s about achieving optimum patient outcomes through access to expertise and personalized care when and where it’s needed most.

JDRF

When an 11-year-old girl was admitted to the pediatrics department at SFMC earlier this year with a first-time diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes, she couldn’t have been in better hands.  Her nurse, Stephanie Kallemeyn, also has Type 1 diabetes and, coincidentally, was also diagnosed at age 11.
“I enjoy taking care of children who have recently been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes,” said Stephanie. “I hope that I can show them that this is something that you can live a normal, productive life with.”

As a child, Stephanie had multiple visits with her pediatric diabetes educator. She decided that is what she wanted to be when she grew up. Nursing school opened her eyes to the possibility of being a pediatric nurse. “I still might be a diabetes educator at some point later in my career,” said Stephanie.

Stephanie feels blessed to have an insulin pump. While she still has to check her blood sugar multiple times a day, her monitor and pump “talk” to each other, taking away a lot of the food calculations that a diabetic without a pump must do.

“I am lucky to be able to live a pretty normal life,” said Stephanie. “Since I was diagnosed so young, this is just how life is so I really don’t feel different.”

Wear your jeans on Friday, August 26 for a $5 donation to JDRF. If you would like to make a contribution but can’t participate by wearing a pair of jeans, join us for a $5 barbeque on the same day at Penrose Hospital from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. in the Vendor parking lot.

There will also be an opportunity to sign up for the walk.

Pikes Peak Challenge

Climbing a mountain is grueling enough work for someone with full bodily mobility, but Dr. Glen House, a C7 quadriplegic since the age of 20, plans to climb famous Pikes Peak in a wheel chair. He will do so to raise money for BIAC (Brain Injury Alliance of Colorado) and Think First.

Dr. House is the Medical Director of the Center for Neuro & Trauma Rehabilitation at Penrose Hospital and host of his own radio Talk Show geared to the disabled community ("Dr. House: Living With and Beyond Disability") heard on www.HealthRadio.net. He was an avid body builder and extreme skier before breaking his neck and injuring his back 21 years ago.

Dr. House will attempt to make the 13-mile climb all the way to the summit of Pikes Peak on Saturday, September 10, 2011 utilizing the wheel chair technology provided by eMotion Wheels.

Penrose-St. Francis is a Bronze level sponsor of the Pikes Peak Challenge. Our team “Penrose on the Peak” is looking for interested hikers to join Dr. House and the rest of our team! For more information, please go online to PikesPeakChallenge.com or contact Kerri Tremaroli at 776-2088. There will only be a total of 450 hikers taking the challenge and registration slots go quickly, so please register today under the Penrose team name if you are interested.

A Difficutl Time to Quit Smoking

When a smoker has been diagnosed with cancer or any other diagnosis, quitting smoking can be extremely difficult due to the stress of the diagnosis. Smoking typically has been used as a stress management tool, and patients may be reluctant to give up this coping strategy.

It’s important for patients to understand that quitting smoking is in their best interest to achieve a better outcome with regard to surgery and treatment. Quitting smoking will allow the body to heal and respond to treatment better. Risks of respiratory failure and pneumonia are lowered.  The risk of developing a second cancer or the same cancer returning is also lowered when someone quits smoking. However, patients who are older or who are diagnosed with an advanced stage of cancer may not see the point of quitting smoking, expressing the view, “I’ve smoked all my life, what’s the point of quitting now?”  But research shows that even those who are age 60 and older still can extend their life if they quit smoking.

Research has shown that quitting smoking can be more difficult than withdrawing from heroin and cocaine. Many times people call smoking a bad habit and expect people to just quit smoking, but the addiction to nicotine is very real and a person needs to really want to quit for themselves.  Because it is so hard, Penrose Cancer Center provides a variety of services to help patients and their loved ones with the difficult task ahead.

Penrose Cancer Center offers a four-week education program, Fresh Start, to assist people to stop smoking as well as one hour-long workshop each month. There is no charge for smoking cessation services, which are open to Penrose Hospital and Cancer Center patients, families, staff and the community at large.

For dates, times and location of the Fresh Start class or monthly workshops, or for individual counseling related to quitting smoking (available to patients/families of Centura), please contact smoking cessation counselor, Emmele Nicholas, LSW, at 776-6048 or email emmelenicholas@centura.org .

Laughter is the best medicine

This is a weekly series of fun stories and jokes to help brighten your day and put a smile on your face.

A few old couples used to get together to talk about life and to have a good time. One day one of the men, Harry, started talking about this fantastic restaurant he went to the other night with his wife.

“Really?”, one of the men said, what’s it called?

After thinking for a few seconds the Harry said, “what are those good smelling flowers called again?”

“Do you mean a rose? the first man questioned.

“Yes that’s it,” he exclaimed.

Looking over at his wife he said, “Rose what’s that restaurant we went to the other night?”
