Diabetes
Diabetes is on the rise. It is estimated that 26 million Americans have diabetes and by the year 2015 it will be 37 million. There are two major types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2. It affects young and old, sometimes with symptoms and many times without any symptoms at all. In type 1 diabetes, people will usually notice increased urination, increased thirst, weight loss and fatigue. It accounts for 5-10 percent of diabetes; it is an autoimmune disease, which means something in the body has triggered a attack on the cells of the pancreas that produce insulin. This causes loss of insulin production. Insulin is a hormone that helps move sugar contained in food into the cells to produce energy our body needs to function. When there is no insulin production, the sugar produced from the food we eat stays in the blood stream and our body doesn’t get the energy it needs to operate.
Until 1851, the diagnosis was based on the taste of urine. Now we base the diagnosis on blood sugar tests. A fasting blood sugar over 126 at least two times is defined as diabetes. Prior to the discovery of insulin, life expectancy was about one year. Without insulin, people with diabetes lost weight, became emaciated and died.
Insulin was discovered in 1921, and was given to people with diabetes in January of 1922. It was and is the life sustaining medication people with type 1 diabetes need to survive. The first insulin was a crude and impure injection given into the muscle; it was painful and caused many abscesses. At present time, we give insulin in the fatty tissue, it is genetically engineered, very pure, can be given with insulin syringes, insulin pens, or thru insulin pumps. Insulin injections are usually given four times a day. The goal is to act like the pancreas used to act, and give insulin with all meals and carbohydrate snacks. With the discovery of insulin, many lives have been saved.
Please consider supporting the JDRF walk on Sept. 10 at America the Beautiful Park. Your support will help search for ways to prevent, better treat, and ultimately find the cure for type 1 diabetes.

Halos for Heroes
Heroes are often so passionate about “doing their job well” that they normally go above and beyond without even thinking about it. That is why Halos for Heroes is so important.
The Halos for Heroes program allows grateful patients, families, and friends an opportunity to recognize the care they received at any Penrose-St. Francis campus. Donations to the Halos for Heroes program help to sustain, expand, and improve our vital programs while recognizing exemplary caregivers.
The Penrose-St. Francis Health Foundation would like to share and congratulate the July recipients of Halos for Heroes awards. Their names are listed below.
July Recipients
• Matt Sturtevant, RT
• Dr. Kit Hooker Back to Top

Penrose Cafe and Bistro
Don’t think a penny is worth anything? During the month of June, patrons of the Penrose Café and Bistro were invited to drop their change into a small jar to benefit the Penrose-St. Francis Trauma Program. Those pennies added up to $146.59. The giving continued in July with $455.18 going to the Penrose Cancer Center. So, as you can tell, a few pennies here, a nickel or dime there can add up to real money to help our patients.
A special thank you to all of you who donated! Back to Top

NODA Wants - and Needs - You…
Are you currently a Penrose-St. Francis Volunteer or Associate who is looking for a very personal way to help those who may be less fortunate than you, people who may have no family or friends in the area, who may be homeless? You may be the individual for whom we are looking. We know it is the time of year when it seems every humanitarian agency is asking for help and money. But our plea is very different…
No One Dies Alone (NODA) is a volunteer program of Compassionate Companions who sit vigil around the clock in the final hours of life with those who either have no one to be with them or whose families are in transit. It is a program that is more rewarding than can be imagined, a program where the unselfish gift of time and compassion offers help beyond measure. Volunteers, made up of those PSF volunteers and associates who have been with PSF for at least 90 days, will go through an extensive orientation which will be held on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Cancer Center Conference Rooms at Penrose Hospital. During this orientation, volunteers will be prepared for the signs and symptoms experienced during the dying process and taught methods of providing emotional and spiritual support for the dying patient.
NODA volunteers will be available to answer questions and sign up new volunteers on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 13th and 14th from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Francis Medical Center across from the cash registers in the cafeteria and Thursday and Friday, September 15th and 16th from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the West Lobby of Penrose Hospital, near the Penrose Café and Bistro.

Pro Cycling Challenge
Just last week, one local news outlet reported that 1 million spectators are expected to line the route of this week-long event as riders make their way through Colorado, not to mention the millions around the world who plan to watch it on TV. This event starts right here in Colorado Springs on Aug. 22. Are you going to be there? Centura has the distinct privilege of being the official medical sponsor for the Pro Cycling Challenge , and Penrose St. Francis’ Emergency and Trauma services will be running a booth near the finish line of the Prologue on August 22 in which race fans can see an array of informative and interesting demonstrations. These include everything from a display on the fragility of the human brain, to car seat safety, to a helmet fittings and much more. Those who stop by the PSF booth will also have the chance to enter a drawing to win a really nice mountain bike and helmet.
So, make plans to join us on Monday, Aug. 22 near the corner of Colorado and Cascade. Back to Top

Pikes Peak Challenge
Penrose-St. Francis is sponsoring and participating in the annual Pikes Peak Challenge hike on Saturday, September 10, 2011. The event is a 13 mile ascent to the 14,110 foot summit of Pikes Peak and is the major fundraising event for the Brain Injury Alliance of Colorado.
In the United States, a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) occurs every 23 seconds. Based on national estimates, there are more annual incidences of Traumatic Brain Injuries than Multiple Sclerosis, Spinal Cord Injuries, HIV/AIDS and Breast Cancer combined. We now know that more than 20 percent of our American soldiers are returning home with a TBI and many have sustained several. There are 5.3 million persons living with disability from TBI.
Penrose-St. Francis is a Bronze level sponsor of the event. Our team, “Penrose on the Peak,” is looking for interested hikers to join our team! For more information, please go online to www.PikesPeakChallenge.com or contact Kerri Tremaroli at 776-2088. There will be a total of 450 hikers taking the challenge and registration slots go quickly, so please register today under the Penrose team name if you are interested.
*All registered hikers are asked to raise a minimum of $150. If you are interested in making a donation to this worthwhile cause you may do so on the website at PikesPeakChallenge.com or by contacting Kerri Tremaroli at 776-2088.
*STRIVE is also offering a free personal training session with two paid sessions for folks interested in receiving training advice/assistance in preparation for the hike. If interested call Jenna at x7494 or Erin x7394.
