Associate Picnic Wrap-up

Did you get a chance to make it out to the annual Associate Picnic at Wonderland Ranch on July 30th? Those that did seemed to have a lot of fun, at least until the rain put a damper on things late in the afternoon.

A special thanks to the Activities Committee for coordinating a wonderful event.

The DJ played everything from the Electric Slide to the Hokey-Pokey.

The petting zoo gave some kids the chance to meet some other kids (i.e. goats) for the first time.

Basketball, volleyball, tether-ball, horseshoes... they had it all.

Everyone got a kick out of the temporary tattoos.

Even CFO Danny Reeves got to try out the bug tattoo.

OK, full disclosure, they have both a 10 ft. basket and a 5 ft. basket at the ranch. I leave it to you to figure out which one this is.

The water balloon toss kept everyone cool.

The watermelon seed spitting contest was really popular, probably because the watermelon was so good.

I think more kids were on the ground than hopping in the sack race. But, I guess that is half the fun.

Wait, isn't that cheating?

Kids of all ages tried their luck in the fishing pond. As Johnny Rea said, "That's why the call it 'fishing,' not 'catching."

Penrose Cardiothoracic Surgery

Penrose Cardiothoracic Surgery Receives 3-Star Rating from Consumer Reports Magazine

Penrose Cardiothoracic Surgery has received a three-star (above national average) rating for heart bypass surgery from Consumer Reports magazine.

Penrose Cardiothoracic Surgery is the only group in southern Colorado to achieve the distinction, which is highlighted in the September edition of the magazine, and one of only 81 groups nation-wide to receive above national average ratings. It marks the second consecutive year Penrose Cardiothoracic Surgery has garnered a three-star rating.

The data comes from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, which gathers information from more than 90 percent of the roughly 1,100 surgical groups in the U.S. that perform cardiac surgery.  Consumer Reports states the ratings allow consumers to compare surgical groups that perform heart bypass surgery based on overall performance, complications and other quality measures.

The team of people at Penrose that provides cardiac surgery care is extremely proud to be recognized as a top program for two consecutive years, according to Dr. John Mehall, a cardiothoracic surgeon with the group.

“This award is an acknowledgment of what is possible when you combine cutting-edge surgical care with the best technology and an outstanding support staff,” he said. “Patients can feel comfortable that Penrose is providing heart surgery outcomes that rival the best in the country and are almost unmatched in Colorado."

JDRF

Living with Type 1 Diabetes

11 months old. That is how old Jonny was when he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.  His parents had no idea that their son was diabetic until they rushed him to the emergency department at Penrose Hospital. Doctors there suspected the infant had gone into DKA and a simple urine test proved it.

(Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a complication of diabetes that occurs when the body cannot use sugar (glucose) as a fuel source because the body has no insulin or not enough insulin, and fat is used instead. Byproducts of fat breakdown, called ketones, build up in the body.)

Matt, who works in the GI Lab at Penrose Hospital, recounted that night. “When the doctor asked me if we have diabetes in our family, my heart just sank.”

Jonny will turn five-years-old this November and his parents say that, since that first night in the hospital, they have never stopped learning about diabetes.  They have also learned that this disease is not widely understood but the whole family has learned to take everything in stride. For example, Jonny has had an insulin pump for the past two years. Out on the playground, other kids will notice the device and tubing and ask Jonny about it.  “He simply says, I have diabetes,” said Matt. “When the kids ask him what that is, he simply replies, ‘It means I’m special’.”

When you are diabetic, checking your blood sugar becomes a part of your day, every day. Matt described a story from a year ago. They had checked Jonny’s sugar at about 2 a.m. and found it was at 230. Doctors had assured them that this was an OK reading while Jonny slept. By morning, Jonny’s sugar had dropped to 35 and he was having a seizure. They still don’t know how it could drop so significantly in such a short period of time but this incident led them to begin looking for a service dog.

Service dogs are trained to recognize changes in blood sugar and the onset of seizure activity. The challenge is that these specially trained dogs are not cheap. The family is working with a trainer in Denver to find a match for Jonny but the cost of the dog is $12,000. The Employee Assistance Fund through the PSF Foundation has helped out and they hope to get a dog later this year.

“This dog will be another line of defense, another tool to help us,” said Matt. “It will also be something positive for him. It will not only be a service dog, it will be a family pet that goes everywhere with us.”

Even though they don’t have a dog yet, Jonny has already come up with a name for his dog, “Arrow.”  Matt thought he came up with the name because the dog would help Jonny keep his blood sugar ‘straight as an arrow.’ Jonny said, “Yea, but it’s also a cool name.”

Their family motto is: We don’t live with diabetes, diabetes lives with us. That is one reason why Matt’s coworkers from the GI Lab and many of his extended family members will be joining them on Sept. 10 for the JDRF Walk. This team of 70 people will be walking specifically for Jonny.

Margaret Sabin, president and CEO, is the chair of this year’s JDRF Walk.

STRIVE Success Story

STRIVE Success Story
Spin Off: Diane DeMasters
Diane DeMasters triumphs in the Tour de Colorado

“I have been participating in many of STRIVE’s fitness classes including Boot Camp and Power Up since the beginning of them and have loved them. I began to notice a difference in my endurance and how toned I was, but I still was not at my ideal weight; therefore, when STRIVE announced the beginning of indoor cycling, I was thrilled! I had never participated in a cycling class and thought a class like this would compliment my current exercise regime. Although, I had never considered myself overweight, I felt that I could become a little leaner. Along with joining cycling, I decided to make changes to my diet as well. After making a conscious decision to change my diet and eat only when hungry (which is hard to do during stressful workdays) I began eating more fruits and vegetables and making smarter food choices. I have to admit sometimes I indulge in a cookie now and then (I have a horrible sweet tooth!). I am surrounded by a great group of friends and we support each other‘s fitness and nutritional goals and occasionally share a cookie. Since I have started indoor cycling, changed my diet, continued boot camp, and gained support from my friends I have lost 14 pounds. Erin is an awesome instructor and she can really motivate us to take ourselves past our comfort zone. Thanks to STRIVE for listening to the associates and offering great classes with such motivational instructors!”

Diane, WAY TO SPIN off the pounds! We at STRIVE are so glad you found another class to complement your current exercise routine and are so thankful that we can offer this amazing class to our associates. This class would not be possible without the help we received from the Volunteer Association. Diane, we hope we can always help you mix up your exercise routine by adding unique classes to our program. Thank you for your dedication to STRIVE and most importantly, to your own health!

Join others to spin off those pounds:

Pikes Peak Challenge

Penrose-St. Francis is sponsoring and participating in the annual Pikes Peak Challenge hike on Saturday September 10, 2011. The event is a 13 mile ascent to the 14,110 foot summit and is the major fundraising event for the Brain Injury Alliance of Colorado.

In the United States a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) occurs every 23 seconds. Based on national estimates, there are more annual incidences of Traumatic Brain Injuries than Multiple Sclerosis, Spinal Cord Injuries, HIV/AIDS and Breast Cancer put together. We now know that over 20% of our American soldiers are returning home with a TBI and many have sustained several. There are 5.3 million persons living with disability from TBI.

Penrose-St. Francis is a Bronze level sponsor of the event. Our team “Penrose on the Peak” is looking for interested hikers to join our team! For more information please go online to PikesPeakChallenge.com or contact Kerri Tremaroli at 776-2088. Monday Musings...

A Random Act of Kindness

Just last week, I was in line in the cafeteria at Penrose. I had just stepped up to the register. There was a nurse who I have never met in line in front of me. Before either she or I realized what was happening, the person across from her had paid for the nurse’s lunch. The lady gave her a smile and said, “Enjoy.” With that, she took her tray and made her way to a table across the room. The nurse, who was clearly surprised, offered a warm thank you.  As the nurse walked away, I heard her say to no one in particular, “Wow, that’s never happened to me before.” As the two went their separate ways, it was clear that they had never met before and this was simply a random act of kindness.

Have you ever had one of those ‘aha’ moments, when you suddenly something someone said an hour ago, a month ago or even years ago makes sense? This was one of those events for me. At the end of many meetings, SFMC CEO Nate Olson always encourages us to do something nice for someone. I have always thought that it is a great idea, but I never get around to it.

Do you think this nurse went back to her floor and told her friends what just happened? Do you think her day was a bit brighter thanks to the generosity of this stranger? Do you think this nurse’s patients noticed anything different in her that afternoon?

What about the stranger?  Why did she do this? Was she paying forward something special that a nurse had done for her or one of her loved ones?  I thought about going and asking her why she had done this but decided not to. She didn’t do it for the recognition.  She simply wanted to brighten the day of a complete stranger.

Maybe she did it to inspire me to do more for others.

Why this particular event happened, we’ll probably never know. But, what if each of us did something nice for someone? Wouldn’t this be a wonderful place to work and a wonderful community to live in? I encourage you to take Nate’s challenge and do something nice for someone – a stranger or someone you know, it doesn’t matter.

REHAB FUN!

For the third consecutive year, the Rehab Buddies, rehab staff, some former patients and friends of rehab made the trip to Denver, on July 24th, to see a stunningly good performance by PHAMALY, a theatre group made up entirely of people who have disabilities.  This year 'How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying' was performed; this 1950's era play is currently enjoying a big revival on Broadway.  But we didn't have to travel to New York to see incredible performers, and these actors and actresses have disabilities such as Spinal Cord Injury, Blindness, Traumatic Brian injury, and others across the spectrum; all are physically, emotionally or cognitively challenged.  They sing, dance and act with such skill and passion!

Fifty four of us attended this year; each year the group gets bigger, and adds to the Rehab sense of camaraderie.  After the play, several of us gathered at the Park Meadows Food Court to eat and chat.

The Rehab Buddies and Rehab staff want to thank Dr. Pio Guerrero for making all the arrangements; he reserved blocks of seats (which allowed a lower ticket price) so we got to sit together, and made special arrangements for those in wheelchairs.

It was a memorable day, and we are already planning for next year.  Attendees are certainly not limited to Rehab.  Next year, we will give provide advance information in the Pulse on the specifics of the PHAMALY summer performance.
