·        That means you received your C.A.R.E. award in your Aug. 27 paycheck!

·        Payment ranged from $45 to $180, depending on number of hours worked

 Strengthening the Foundation

·        We’re continuing with our plans to vacate St. Francis Health Center by Dec. 31.  The money we save in operational costs will help to ensure PSF remains strong and viable well into the future.  PSF is in discussions with community health organizations on the future of in-patient behavioral health at SFHC.  A decision is expected by the end of the year.

·        PSF is working with a third-party developer to pursue the construction of a four-story medical office building on the Penrose Hospital campus.  As we look to the future of health care, hospital-physician partnerships play a key role in the delivery of care. Having more physician office space on our campus not only makes sense from a business perspective, but also benefits our patients with convenient access to outpatient services in the hospital.  In anticipation of construction of the new medical office building, COO Jamie Smith and his team are working to address parking because it will be impacted by the construction process and the new building. A number of creative ideas were presented during the Town Hall meetings and the team will look into the feasibility of them all. Jamie's goal is to make parking at Penrose as convenient as possible for everyone: patients, visitors, physicians, volunteers and associates. An additional 28 parking spots for associates have just been identified.

·        Dr. Toni Green joined the breast cancer team at Penrose-St. Francis on August 1 as a breast surgeon, breast health specialist and medical director of breast oncology.  She completed her fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She was a resident at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and graduated from Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine.

·        PSF welcomed cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Martin Beggs, to the Centura Health family. Dr. Beggs joins Penrose Cardiothoracic Surgery after 12 years in private practice in Sarasota, Florida. He specializes in diseases of the heart and aorta. As a surgeon, he collaborates with each patient’s primary care physician and cardiologist to create a comprehensive care plan, focusing on the patient’s entire course of treatment, including pre- and postoperative care.

Systems of Care

·        The Langstaff-Brown Urgent Care Center, which opened its doors in 1982, changed its name to Penrose Mountain Urgent Care on Sept. 1. New providers, new technology and a whole new way of healing the urgent medical needs of Teller County residents is what this newly renovated facility will provide.  A building dedication for the Langstaff-Brown Medical Campus is planned for Oct. 9.

·        The PSF Women’s Services Advisory Council continues to meet regularly and is making progress toward shaping the strategic direction of women’s services for the system.

·        Mercy Medical Center in Durango is the newest member to the Centura Health family.

·        The ED physician group at PSF is now providing ED services at St. Thomas More Hospital in Canon City, which we hope will help eliminate “leakage” to non-Centura hospitals.

·        Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care (PPHPC) and Penrose-St. Francis Health Services have entered into a Letter of Intent. Both parties desire to move PPHPC inpatient hospice services currently located in St. Francis Health Center to dedicated space within Penrose Hospital.

Moving Upstream

·        About 200 participants in PSF’s Old North End Neighborhood Healthy Neighborhood Project recently participated in the six-month follow-up screening and health risk assessment.  We have received a few written testimonies on how participants have changed their lifestyles based on the participation and resources received throughout this project.  We’re planning an ONEN Celebration on Sept. 24 that will bring together participants, their families, coaches, project coordinators and key community members to celebrate the success of the project and share before-and-after results.

·        PSF is offering a three-month “Good Health is Good Business” wellness program for members of the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce staff.  The program includes pre- and post- health screenings, health risk assessments, wellness coaching, free bootcamp classes and free health and wellness classes.  Incentives can be earned by a point system for every minute of exercise and a point system for every pound lost.  Reward proceeds will go directly to the Chamber.  The project may provide opportunities to partner with local businesses on wellness and prevention.

·        Club HIIP is one of the longest sustaining and most successful associate wellness programs in the United States with many opportunities to improve your health and fitness level.  Stop by and visit with them so you, too, can be on the road to a healthier lifestyle!

Parking at Penrose

Have you met Michael? He is our new community relations person. Well, he is not new, he has worked with us for about a year and a half but his job role is new. But wait, if he works in community relations, why is he wearing a security uniform? Let me explain.

Michael’s role is to help ensure that everyone who drives onto our campus can find an appropriate place to park. His role is to give directions and answer questions. “I really enjoy meeting our customers,” he said. “For example, if someone is trying to find the 8th floor, I can offer directions from the parking lot, all the way to the 8th floor.”

Part of his role is to walk through the neighborhood to ensure that people coming to the hospital are not parking in front of homes in the surrounding neighborhood. “A lot of the neighbors have thanked me,” said Michael. “They say that their guests can park in front of their house again.” He also gets an occasional call from the neighborhood hotline where neighbors can report someone parking in front of their home.

“I used to live in California and employees from a nearby office would park in front of my house so I know first hand what it is like to not be able to park in front of your own home,” said Michael.

So what is the worst part of his job? “I have almost been run over a few times by people driving too fast in the parking lot or going the wrong way,” he said. “But I love being outside and I love the cold so I am looking forward to the winter.”

The parking situation has gotten considerably better since Michael took on this new role. Visitors comment that they now have no problem at all finding a parking place. In addition, random checks of the parking garage show that space is still available most days (usually on the 5th floor).

Michael said that if you ever need anything, just ask. He is always happy to help.

You asked for it… We listened!

During last week’s Town Hall meetings, the point was made that additional associate parking was needed at Penrose. This must be a new PSF record because, in less than 48 hours, a plan that allows for 28 additional associate parking spaces was developed. These additional spots are on the southeast part of the main parking lot near the corner of Madison and Nevada.  If you use this area, we request that you do not park beyond the furthest yellow posts, reserving the rest of the lot for our patients and visitors. An updated map is included below to show the authorized parking area. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

PSF Associate Art Show

“Art is the desire of a man to express himself, to record the reactions of his personality to the world he lives in.”  ~Amy Lowell

There is still time to submit your registration form for the Associate Art Show! All PSF Associates, Physicians and Volunteers are invited to participate. You may be saying “I’m not an artistic person”. You don’t have to be! If you have a cool or interesting photo you took while on a family vacation, we want you to display it. Maybe you took a painting or ceramics class. We want to see what you created. The art pieces do not have to be “museum-quality”. If you made it, you like it, and it fits PSF policy guidelines, please share it!

The Art Show will run from September 30th through October 2nd at both Penrose Hospital and St. Francis Medical Center. Registration forms are available on-site near the Rewards & Recognition posters. Downloadable forms can be obtained through My Virtual Workplace. Simply log in and scroll to the bottom of the main screen under Penrose-St. Francis. Submission deadline is September 24th.

If you have any questions, please contact Tracy Miles at 719-548-7085 or by email at tracymiles@catholichealth.net.

Laughter is the best medicine

This is a weekly series of fun stories and jokes to help brighten your day and put a smile on your face.

Since football season is underway, I thought a few football jokes were in order. Enjoy!

Football Math Test
A football coach walked into the locker room before a game, looked over to his star player and said, "I'm not supposed to let you play since you failed math, but we need you in there. So, what I have to do is ask you a math question, and if you get it right, you can play."

The player agreed, and the coach looked into his eyes intently and asks, "Okay, now concentrate hard and tell me the answer to this. What is two plus two?"

The player thought for a moment and then he answered, "4?"

"Did you say 4?" the coach exclaimed, excited that he got it right.

At that, all the other players on the team began screaming, "Come on coach, give him another chance!"

John Elway goes to Heaven
John Elway, after living a full life, died. When he got to heaven, God was showing him around. They came to a modest little house with a faded Broncos flag in the window. "This house is yours for eternity, John," said God. "This is very special; not everyone gets a house up here." John felt special, indeed, and walked up to his house.

On his way up the porch, he noticed another house just around the corner. It was a 3-story mansion with a Green & White & Silver sidewalk, a 50 foot tall flagpole with an enormous EAGLES logo flag, and in every window, an Eagles emblem.

John looked at God and said "God, I'm not trying to be ungrateful, but I have a question. I was an all-pro QB, I won 2 Super Bowls, and I even went to the Hall of Fame."

God said "So what's your point John?"

"Well, why does Donovan McNabb get a better house than me?"

God chuckled, and said "John, that's not Donovan's house, it's mine."

Empty Seat
A Denver Broncos fan was enjoying himself at the game in a packed Mile High Stadium, until he noticed an empty seat down in front. He went down and asked the guy next to it if he knew whose seat it was.

The guy said, "Yes, that's my wife's seat. We have never missed a game since the Craig Morton days, but now my wife is dead."

The fan offered his sympathy and said it was really too bad that he couldn't find some relative to give the ticket to and enjoy the game together.

"Oh no." the guy said. "They're all at the funeral."

Pasta in the Park

The Penrose-St. Francis team did a wonderful job at the 18th annual Pasta in the Park to benefit Tessa with their Rocky Mountain Bolognese pasta sauce. Our sauce, which featured a variety of wild game meats, didn't win an award but those that sampled it really enjoyed it.

Special thanks to our team - Executive Chef Taylor Owen (not pictured), Michelle Somers, Sharon Jacob and Julie Cox .
