The New PMUC
Change. Some people fear it, others can’t wait to see what is next. Seems like things are always changing in healthcare. So what is changing now? The Langstaff-Brown Urgent Care Center. Before we talk about the change, let’s talk about the history.
St. Francis Hospital founded the original facility in 1982 as the Rampart Range Emergency Center. The name was later changed to Langstaff-Brown Urgent Care Center as a memorial tribute to Dr. Kim Langstaff, a Teller County resident and former chief of emergency medicine at St. Francis, and Pete Brown, a former Woodland Park mayor.

This is the original invitation to the grand opening celebration in 1982.

The building as it looked in the 80's.

Do you remember the St. Francis Hospital Newsletter? I love the title. This is the May 1983 issue.
So what is changing? The Langstaff-Brown Urgent Care Center will become Penrose Mountain Urgent Care on Sept. 1. New providers, new technology and a whole new way of healing the urgent medical needs of Teller County residents is what this newly renovated facility will provide.
New providers. Team Health, a national leader in emergency services, will be staffing the new facility with physicians beginning Sept. 1. Specially trained nurse practitioners from Penrose-St. Francis will also be available to provide walk-in urgent care services to both adults and children.
New technology. Penrose-St. Francis has expanded services to include ultrasound, digital X-ray and outpatient lab services, seven days a week, at Penrose Mountain Urgent Care.
“As the health care needs of our community changes, we, too, have to evolve in order to meet those needs,” said Rebecca Morland, manager of Penrose Mountain Urgent Care. “This new model of care provides convenient access for routine and urgent medical needs, but also allows us to tap into the resources at Penrose-St. Francis Health Services in Colorado Springs for those unique or more critical needs.”
To continue the Langstaff-Brown heritage, the building will be renamed the Langstaff-Brown Medical Campus. In addition to urgent care services, the Langstaff-Brown Medical Campus is home to Colorado Springs Sport and Spine Center with physical therapy and rehabilitation services. Colorado Springs Health partners are also opening a family practice office on the campus on Sept. 1.
Penrose Mountain Urgent Care will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends. Back to Top

Meet Dr. Green
After spending years in training in the Midwest, Dr. Toni Green thought it was time to move back out west. She grew up in Arizona and missed all that this part of the country has to offer. “I am looking forward to getting out and doing all of the Colorado things like hiking and skiing,” said Dr. Green.
Dr. Green joined the breast cancer team at Penrose-St. Francis on August 1 as a breast surgeon, breast health specialist and medical director of breast oncology. She completed her fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She was a resident at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and graduated from Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Dr. Green is working to bring Radioactive Seed Localization to Colorado. It’s a new procedure that makes treating breast cancer more comfortable and convenient for women, said Dr. Green.
The standard way of locating a tumor involves threading a wire through a needle to the site of the tumor. A surgeon then follows the wire to the tumor and removes it. For some women, the procedure can be uncomfortable and painful.
With the new procedure, doctors use a radioactive titanium seed about the size of a grain of rice. A tiny Geiger counter is used to read the signal from the grain of rice to locate the tumor inside the breast. It allows the surgeon to make precise incisions around the tumor, which is removed with the seed.
A study conducted by the Mayo Clinic in 2008, showed this method to be more accurate in pin-pointing the location of a tumor which means less healthy tissue is removed during the lumpectomy. Preserving healthy tissue results in less disfigurement for the patient.
The seed technique is relatively new and is one of the cutting-edge procedures that Dr. Green is working to bring to southern Colorado. “There is more to it. It is not just about cancer. We are here to take care of women and her family,” said Dr. Green. Back to Top

2020 Corner
Champions 2020 at the Penrose-St. Francis Picnic

The annual PSF picnic was held on July 31st at Wonderland Park in Black Forest, northeast of Colorado Springs, and the 2020 Champions were there in force.
The combined Penrose Hospital and St. Francis Medical Center team decided that the picnic served as an excellent opportunity to showcase the long-range Centura business plan by featuring the three “tenets” of 2020, while promoting a fun atmosphere – and a little challenge to boot.
The challenge involved having associates match recent PSF accomplishments with the tenet to which they applied, in game-like format. For example, the creation of an “Integrated Trauma System” aligned with “Systems of Care,” whereas the Old North End Homeowners healthy neighborhood project exemplified “Moving Upstream.”
Associates who participated were entered into a raffle to win a lovely floral arrangement at the end of the day (and Kristi Ecklund, a Physical Therapist from our Outpatient Rehab service won the bouquet).
The table was staffed from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the Champions had approximately 30 in-depth conversations with associates during the course of the picnic. It was an excellent opportunity to engage associates when they had the time to discuss the themes of Centura’s future. Back to Top

First and Main Recap
First & Main Summer Concert Series Comes to a Close

The 2010 First & Main Summer Concert Series came to a close on July 30 with literally a boom and clap of thunder and lightning. As a whole, the summer series went by without a hitch.
Over 11,000 people attended the nine-week concert series this year. The nine bands, which included favorites like Phat Daddy and the Phat Horn Doctors and the Jake Loggins Band had people dancing in the aisles.
Thanks to coverage by KRDO Channel 13 and their noon news program, our Blood Bank, Trauma Services, Pediatrics and Birth Center were highlighted with TV and radio time. Several impromptu interviews were also done live at the concert.
Moving upstream was our goal as the community learned more about their health and what issues contribute to their wellness, with trivia questions supplied by all our service lines represented this year. Special thanks goes out to SFMC Nutrition Services, Penrose Cancer Center, Cardiology, The Sleep Center, Trauma Services, Pediatrics, Blood Bank, Donor Alliance, Rehabilitation Services, and the Birth Center.
Didn’t get a chance to make it out to one of the concerts this year, there is always next year!

The Jake Loggins Band.

Be the Change
Be The Change Program…
Making a Difference in Our Community
The Rewards and Recognition Committee began a year long inspirational journey, in July 2010, simply called “Be The Change” program. Be The Change Program is a voluntary, PSF sponsored program being piloted this year. There are six teams of 10 associates participating. To keep it fun and a bit competitive, each team member gains monthly scores participating in different opportunities within our community. The activities are simple and easy to do from donating items, to giving blood, participating in walk-a-thons or volunteering time. At the end of the year, the team with the most points receive $100 gift card for each member.
Jeanne Rice, Medical Staff Services, led a group of 25 PSF associates on a tour at Serenity Springs Wildlife. The benefit to the sanctuary was a donation of $350 and 25 gallons of bleach, among other items on their wish list. This sanctuary is home to 109 big cats, of which 40-50 are available on tour. It was truly a unique experience...and the chance to interact with the cats made it extra special!
“The funds donated from your tour went to help pay for servicing of two anesthesia machines for a very much needed dental day for the cats,” said Jeanne. “The Peter Emily Foundation granted the Sanctuary two days of very much needed dental treatment for the cats. They were all extremely difficult cases: root canals, extractions, and even removal of pieces of jawbone. I had the opportunity to observe them working on one of the tigers and it was absolutely incredible. The blood pressure cuffs for tigers & lions are pretty darn big!!”

Laughter is the best medicine
This is a weekly series of fun stories and jokes to help brighten your day and put a smile on your face.
True Stories
A father knelt with his son to hear his prayers. The three year old boy began in all seriousness: "Our Father who Art in Heaven, how do You know my name? And another four-year-old prayed: "And forgive us our trash baskets as we forgive those who put trash in our baskets."
Newly assigned officers to a Naval Air Station are quite often "adopted" by a family. One such young officer, a Lieut Commander, kind-of became an Uncle to the family's only 4 year old daughter. One Sunday, he asked her what she had learned in Sunday School. She said she had learned all about the ten commanders, and that they were always broke.
Do you want to go to heaven?
Father Donnegan walks into a pub in Donegal, and says to the first man he meets," Do you want to go to Heaven?"
The man said, "That I do Father."
Then Father Donnegan said, " Then stand over there against the wall."
Then Father Donnegan asks the second man, "Do you want to go to Heaven?"
"Sure and I do, Father" was the man's earnest reply.
"The stand over there against the wall." said the priest.
Then Father Donnegan walks up to O'Malley and asks, "Do you want to go to heaven?"
O'Malley said, "Why no, Father, I don't."
The incredulous priest said,"I don't believe this. You mean to tell me you don't want to go to heaven when you die?"
O'Malley said, Oh, when I die yes, that's another matter altogether. I thought you were getting up a group to go right now."
