Excellent Performance is Recognized Here
About a year and a half ago, an Associate Satisfaction Team was formed at Penrose-St. Francis. Early on, our team was instrumental in getting the word out about participation in the Spring, 2009 Press-Ganey Associate Satisfaction Survey. After PSF received the results of this survey, the team went to work exploring various aspects of associate satisfaction and engagement. Three subcommittees were formed; our subcommittee was charged with looking at how to improve the score on the survey item “Excellent Performance is Recognized Here.” You may recall that this was among the lowest scoring items and did not show improvement on the Pulse Survey that was done several months later. Our subcommittee decided that in order to better understand how to improve in this area, we’d need to ask other associates what recognition and excellent performance meant to them. So, a Zoomerang survey was developed for this purpose. In fact, when the idea was shared with Senior Leadership, they decided that we should conduct the survey for the entire South State Hospital Group. In early May 2010, many of you responded to the survey: 726 associates from PSF, 276 from SMC and 119 from STM!
THANK YOU!!!
Now we’d like to share the results with you and let you know about some things that will be happening in the organization as next steps.
Below, in the column to the left, you can see the questions that were included in the survey. To the right of the question, you can see the combined results for all South State Facilities.
(We appologize, but the charts didn't reproduce well in this newsletter.)

The ranking of the top items for the question about Excellent Performance were the same for all three facilities.
The third question was open-ended and many comments were received. A large number of the comments had to do with a desire for a “pay for performance” system. There were other comments about continuing education, career development, ideas for new recognition programs, and communication.
We have recently learned that a “Pay for Performance” system has been in development over the course of the last several months that will be implemented across all of Centura. Communication about the details of this plan will be coming later this fall. We had a robust discussion about how to effectively communicate important information in our organization. We tapped the marketing adage “Seven Times, Seven Ways.” With that in mind, he following are some thoughts we had about the seven ways important information, including Pay for Performance, could be communicated:
1. Via our managers at staff meetings
2. An article in the facility newsletter (The Pulse at PSF)
3. Via e-mail to all associates
4. Associate Forums/Town Hall meetings
5. Department Communication Boards
6. Friday Update
7. A link on My Virtual Workplace
The other significant theme was a clear desire that more gratitude and appreciation be shown to associates by leaders. Our subcommittee will be engaging in a discussion about what we might see leaders doing so that associates would feel that they are being thanked and valued. We will share our recommendations with the leaders at all three South State facilities. As a side note: saying thank you and letting others know you value time is not a behavior exclusive to leaders! We will be a happier, more fulfilled organization if we all express gratitude and appreciation for each other every day.
To a lesser degree were comments about continuing education, career development, ideas for new recognition programs and communication.
Stay tuned!

Rehabilitation! Who we are and what we do!
The Rewards and Recognition Committee is proud to salute the Inpatient Rehabilitation team for their compassion, dedication and living the PSF mission. Theresa Lutze summarized the staff’s spirit by saying, “We all feel privileged to be part of the miracles taking place daily on the 8th floor!”
Who are we? We are a circle of healers; physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, CNA’s, nurses, physicians and Rehab Buddies. We each have our place in the restoration of body, mind and spirit.
Eleanor Capron Inpatient Rehabilitation began as a generous gift to the people of southern Colorado from Keith Capron in loving memory of his wife, Eleanor. The Caprons moved to Colorado Springs following Keith’s retirement as vice president with the Chicago Tribune. Eleanor had been a vivacious and intelligent woman – a reporter that had a deep interest in people and the problems they face each and every day. In her later years, she had Alzheimer’s disease and suffered many years of severe disability before dying in 1982. Her spirit is reflected by this dedicated staff of more than 30 nurses, a dozen-plus physical, occupational and speech/language therapists and technicians, along with counselors and case managers, with a belief in people and their potential to overcome obstacles and live as fully as possible. The team is lead by Director, Charlie Stine, Theresa Lutze, RN Clinical Manage and Pat Matela, Inpatient Rehab - Therapy Manager. They are assisted by Admissions Coordinator, Kerri Tremaroli, PAI Coordinator, Janet Teusch, RN, Troy Pontello, Inpatient Rehab - Therapy Coordinator, and Case Manager, Jack Towery.
Rehabilitation is a process that promotes the recovery of function resulting from an injury or illness. The PSF Inpatient Rehabilitation unit is a combination of medical, rehab nursing and intensive rehabilitative services - working together as a team, to assist patients in achieving sufficient recovery to return home or to another community setting.
Upon admission to Capron Rehab, a patient is evaluated and an individualized care plan is created. The department serves up to 19 patients for as long as six weeks of daily therapy treatments. Family participation in the patient’s daily care is also encouraged. The staff provides special teaching sessions for family in order to better prepare for the challenges faced upon discharge. In addition, the clinical staff is trained in Neuro Developmental Treatment (NDT), a distinction unparalleled in the field. This specialized training underscores a commitment to the neurological approach to care.
Another facet of continuing support is the opportunity for the patient to be partnered with a Rehab Buddy, who serves as a mentor. Buddies may also be family members of a former patient. They understand and have lived the challenges faced throughout recovery and rehabilitation. Buddies are referred to the program by the unit’s Medical Director, Dr. Glenn House or Dr. Pio Guerrero, and work with Connie Wallace, RN, Rehab Buddy Coordinator. They are part of the PSF Volunteer Services program and are matched with a patient having a similar rehabilitation profile. Buddies have an ability to listen and understand what the patient is experiencing, and offer the support and encouragement during the critical adjustment periods with “I’ve been there” and healing happens.
One of the patients said it well, “The staff comes to my room just full of confidence, and they give me confidence! We laugh together, they do what they do and I do what I do. It’s a dance!” And a staff member’s description: “To work with these awesome and hardworking patients every day is amazing! It is great to see how teamwork between staff and patients helps reach the end goal.”

Halos for Heroes
Heroes are often so passionate about “doing their job well” that they normally go above and beyond without even thinking about it. That is why Halos for Heroes is so important.
The Halos for Heroes program allows grateful patients, families and friends an opportunity to recognize the care they received at any Penrose-St. Francis campus. Donations to the Halos for Heroes program help to sustain, expand and improve our vital programs while recognizing exemplary caregivers.
Penrose-St. Francis Health Foundation is excited to announce that YOU have been nominated as one patient’s hero! A recent Penrose-St. Francis patient had such wonderful care, that she could not name one person. Her words to share with you are: “My gift is in honor of every person employed at Penrose-St. Francis. You ALL are wonderful.”
It is the pleasure for all of us at the Penrose-St. Francis Health Foundation to CONGRATULATE and THANK each one of you for what you do every day to impact the lives of those in your care!
If you have questions regarding this program, please contact the Foundation at 776-7760. Back to Top

Woodland Park Community Outreach

Rebecca Morland, Clinical Manager, Langstaff Brown Urgent Care (pictured above with Tracey Pearce) and her team participated in the Sports Physical Event at Woodland Park High School on Aug. 5. Other volunteers from LSB included Jamie Hanson and Mary Harrell. Jamie and Mary assisted with the physicals - Tracey and Rebecca staffed our table. They gave out about 160 coolers with the LSB logo and visited with many athletes and parents, coaches and school administrators.
Coaches, principles, the athletic director and athletic trainer were all very pleased to hear that LSB will stay open late for home football games. Just another example of how LSB is committed to the Teller County community.

Rehab Buddies
PSF Rehab Attends Big City Theatre!
Submitted by Connie Wallace, RN-C, Rehab Buddy Coordinator, Nurse Counselor
"It was stunning!"
"I've seen a lot of theatre, and this was the best."
"I'll be thinking about this day, and this production, for a long time. It will stay with me."
"They are such great actors that I forgot they have disabilities, then when I remember, it adds many layers of meaning."
"Let's go to their (PHAMALY'S) next performance, and the ones after that."
"Wow, what a day! Rehab Buddies, Rehab staff, Rehab doctor and Rehab friends being together!"
Such were the comments after the Aug.8 PHAMALY performance of Beauty and the Beast, at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, attended by Penrose Capron Rehabilitation Rehab Buddies, staff and friends.
The entire cast performing Beauty and the Beast live with disabilities, including stroke, paralysis, brain injury, multiple sclerosis, vision and hearing deficits, mental illness and others. The theatre company is PHAMALY, which stands for Physically Handicapped Actors and Musical Artists. This is their 21st season. They have received numerous awards in Denver, including Best Musical in 2009. They are the only performing arts organization in the US producing year round theatre which only casts people with physical, cognitive and emotional disabilities.
Penrose's Capron Rehabilitation's own volunteer group, the Rehab Buddies, all live with disabilities, and make encouraging visits to current Rehab patients. These visits are a great encouragement and are often a significant help in the patient developing a sense of hope. The Rehab buddies have specialized training and attend monthly educational offerings. They are an integral part of the rehab healing process, and their services are greatly appreciated by patients, families, physicians and Capron Rehab staff.
Dr. Pio Guerrero, physician on 8th floor Rehab, graciously made all the arrangements for 50 people to attend this wonderful event. He ensured special seating for those needing it. We thank him for alerting us to the rich experience of attending PHAMALY performances. An anonymous donor decreased the cost of tickets for the Rehab Buddies.
We had such a great time together!
For more information on PHAMALY & for dates, titles of upcoming performances go to
www.phamaly.org or call 303-575-0005.

The Lord's Prayer
A mother had been teaching her three-year daughter, Caitlin, the Lord's prayer. For several evenings at bedtime, she would repeat after her mother the lines from the prayer. Finally, she decided to go solo. The mother listened with pride as she carefully enunciated each word, right up to the end of the prayer: "Lead us not into temptation," she prayed, "but deliver us some E-mail. Amen."
