July 12, 2010

Note: Many associates do not regularly check their PSF e-mail. Please print this e-newsletter and make it available to your associates and co-workers. All past Penrose Pulse issues and other Centura Health newsletters can be accessed by visiting www.centuranews.org. Thank you.

New MOB on Penrose Campus

Penrose-St. Francis Health Services is working with a third-party developer to pursue the construction of a four-story medical office building on the Penrose Hospital campus.

The proposed medical office building is the orange colored building in the drawing above.

Please note - this is just an architect rendering and the final building may differ from this concept.

As we look to the future of health care, hospital-physician partnerships play a key role in the delivery of care. Having more physician office space on our campus not only makes sense from a business perspective, but also benefits our patients with convenient access to outpatient services in the hospital.

Additionally, part of our Penrose Hospital site development plan includes a small community park on the northwest part of our campus. We are now moving forward with the development of a park, near the intersection of Cascade and Jackson.

Meet your Leaders

This is a weekly column where you can meet your Penrose-St. Francis leaders.

Do you know who won the World Cup? I bet Mary Kielma does because she is a huge sports fan. When she is not busy being the director of the Laboratory, you can find Mary watching the latest game on TV and chatting it up about the latest scores in any sport, during any season.

When she’s not cheering for her favorite team, Mary jokes and says she does, “what my staff tells me too!” Really, she makes sure her associates have the training, knowledge, and tools to provide the best quality laboratory service possible to the patients, nurses, and physicians that the PSF lab serves.

She’s been part of the PSF family for almost 25 years! Mary started in 1986 at Penrose as a medical technology intern. After college, she began working in the Chemistry Lab. Shortly after, she moved to the Microbiology Lab. Mary quickly moved up the ranks from supervisor to manager and into her current role as the director.

Mary’s leadership role extends outside PSF. She has served on the advisory board for the Health Trust Purchasing Group for the past three years and is also the leader of a Centura Laboratory Services Best Practice Team. And if that’s not enough, Mary is working on her master’s degree in Clinical Practice Management from Texas Tech University.

How does she do it? Mary says it’s the patients and people she works with that make it all worthwhile.

If that wasn’t enough, Mary also has a 15-year-old daughter that keeps her busy and three cats.

Eagle Scout Project benefits SFMC patients

For his Eagle Scout project, Hunter Milner decided to make 65 blankets for the patients at SFMC (45 baby blankets and 20 adult blankets). It took him over 40 hours to make all of these blankets. He donated them to SFMC Pediatrics and SFMC ED patients. Both Kathleen Woodard, Clinical Manager for Pediatrics, and Mary Gronberg, Charge Nurse for the ED, were thrilled to receive such a generous gift.

First and Main Summer Concerts

We have never seen so many people movin' and grovin' at the First and Main Summer Concerts, sponsored by Penrose-St. Francis, than Friday, July 2. Phat Daddy & The Phat Horn Doctors sure got the whole place dancing. There was even a line of people dancing that stretched the length of the stage, and then some.

Our trauma department was well represented with Dr. Roger Nagy introducing the band. Our booth was right in the middle of the action with Flight for Life, the Colorado Springs Fire Department and AMR all on-site to reinforce our trauma program.

PSF Art Show

At a recent lunch with Margaret, associates expressed interest in learning more about the wonderful artwork that decorates our hospitals. This is a weekly series featuring the artwork and historical pieces seen in our hospitals.

On the second floor of SFMC, just outside of the Administration offices, you will find these two pieces by Anthony Archuleta. The top one is called "Garden of the Gods in Winter" and the second one is called "Garden of the Gods Looking North." Anthony lives at the edge of Garden of the Gods so he didn't have to travel far for his inspiration.

Lunch With Margaret

Ever think about what you would do if you were CEO for a day? What do you like best about working here? Join Margaret Sabin, President and CEO of Penrose-St. Francis Health Services, for a FREE lunch and an informal chat. She would love to hear ideas on how we can work together to make PSF a better place to work or provide a better experience for our patients.

Lunch is open to everyone – associates, volunteers and physicians – working at any PSF facility.  Space is limited to 20 people per month, so an R.S.V.P is required by e-mailing Julie Cox at juliecox@centura.org. Please designate which month you would like to attend. Include your contact information, the department and facility you work for, and a number where you can be reached.

The next lunch date is:

July 30, Penrose Hospital – Barry Nolan Conference Room – 11:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

Greyhound
It isn't moving. Who cares?

Labrador Retriever
Oh, me, me, me!!!!! Pleeeeeeeze let me change the light bulb! Can I? Can I? Huh? Huh? Can I? Pleeeeeeeze? Please, please, please?

Golden Retriever
The day is young. The sun is shining. We've got our whole lives ahead of us. And you're inside the house worrying about a burned out bulb?

Jack Russell Terrier
I'll just pop it in while I'm bouncing off the furniture and walls.

Australian Shepherd
First, let me put all the light bulbs in a little circle...

Rottweiler
Try and make me.

Chihuahua
Yo quiero Taco Bulb. Or - We don't need no stinkin' light bulb!

Border Collie
Just one? Then I'll replace any wiring I find that's not up to code.

Old English Sheep Dog
What light bulb? I'm sorry, but I don't see any light bulb!

German Shepherd
I'll change it as soon as I've led these people out of the dark, checked to make sure I haven't missed anyone and made one last perimeter patrol to see that no one has tried to take advantage of the situation.

Dachshund
You know I can't reach that dumb lamp!

"Picnic in the Pines" at Benet Hill Monastery

A day of fun for the whole family is planned for Saturday July 17 at the new Benet Hill Monastery and Ministry Center.  From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Monastery will throw open its doors to welcome the community and celebrate summer at the first annual “Picnic in the Pines” event at the Benet Pines Retreat Center located in the Black Forest area at 3190 Benet Lane in northeast Colorado Springs.

According to Sr. Rose Ann Barmann, the Monastery’s Development Director, “this family centered event will offer loads of fun, fellowship and entertainment for kids and adults of all ages!”

“With all-you-can eat BBQ, beer, wine and beverages, ‘Picnic in the Pines’ promises to be a great day in a magnificent woodland setting,” said Barmann.

Entertainment ranges from music by the New Horizons Combo Band, carriage rides, games for all ages including face painting and treasure hunts, an antique car show, a pig roast, bounce house, “Wacky Trikes” and nature walks.  There will be plenty of free parking and a free shuttle bus.

In addition, tickets for a drawing may be purchased for just $10 apiece, whether or not you plan to attend the event.  Drawing items include a one-week stay in a gorgeous new condo in Costa Rica; a gourmet dinner at Benet Hill with Bishop Hanifen, Rabbi Hirsch and Reverend Trigg; several beautiful quilts and handmade stained glass; certificates for photo sessions, golf and accommodations and meals at several area hotels.   Drawing items can be viewed at www.benethillmonastery.org

Event Chairperson Joan Klein stated that “Picnic in the Pines” will also showcase Benet Hill’s new facilities.  Said Klein, “Funds raised through this event and the drawing will provide much-needed support for the important programs and services offered to the community by the ministries of Benet Hill.”

The Benedictine sisterhood has been an important part of religious life in Colorado when the Sisters brought their education ministry to the state nearly 100 years ago.  In 1963, the Sisters founded Benet Hill Academy on Chelton Road, which provided an education based on academic excellence and Catholic moral values for over 2,000 girls in its nearly 20-year tenure.  Benet Hill is rooted in over 1500 years of the Benedictine Tradition that was born in the hearts of St. Benedict and St. Scholastica, “to seek God in community.”

“Because Retreat Ministry has been an integral part of “Benet Pines’ for many years, it best exemplifies the key elements of our mission: hospitality, community and openness to all cultures and faiths,” said Sr. Anne Stedman, OSB, Prioress.  The new location opened in October 2009.

The community is welcome and invited to attend this wonderful event.  Tickets may be purchased online at www.benethillmonastery.org or by calling 719-574-2037.  Ticket prices range from $25 for individuals to $100 for an entire family residing in the same household.  Children under the age of five will be admitted for free.

Along with chairperson Joan Klein and Sr. Rose Ann Barmann, the “Picnic in the Pines” committee includes volunteers Julie Armstrong, Leslie Bent, Theresa Brown, Mary Beth Cipoletti, Chris Cipoletti, Janet Conover, Shay Dickerson, Lauren Giusti, Marty Kiernan, Sue Kiernan, Bliss Krucas, Cathy Marta, Mary Parsons, Jim Rocklin, Maryann Stadjuhar, Katie Stuart, Michel Tomsic and Gene Tourville.
