Ali Vincent was here...

Who is Ali Vincent?

Ali Vincent –  the first female winner of the hit NBC show, “The Biggest Loser,” and author of “Believe It. Be It” – made a special appearance at Penrose Hospital on Friday as she helped Kick off the Mind Body Sole Tour with Famous Footwear.

Ali participated in “Random Acts of Famous” by visiting Penrose Hospital and surprising nurses – the often unsung heroes of the medical field who spend long days on their feet. She visited the Critical Care Unit on the 2nd floor and the 4th floor.

Ali and CEO Margaret Sabin taught a bootcamp class together on Sat. morning in our fitness center. More than 40 people participated in the class.

Here are more photos from her visit to the floors on Friday...

Inside Centura 2020

Have you heard the term "moving upstream" as it relates to our 2020 initiative? Do you understand what it means?

MOVING UPSTREAM
We BELIEVE in shifting emphasis from curing sickness to promoting wellness.
We BELIEVE that we can help change how people think about caring for their health.
We BELIEVE in primary care and extending care to people outside our communities.

Here is a recent example of Moving Upstream.
PSF CEO Margaret Sabin was invited to host a 40-minute fitness class for the Colorado Springs Fire Department on June 22.  CSFD observed Health & Safety Week by airing a variety of programs on fitness, healthy cooking and safety on their closed circuit TV station.  Margaret’s fitness class was broadcast live via closed circuit and rebroadcast later in the week, giving all 350 CSFD staff an opportunity to participate in the fitness class.  The class focused on using your own body weight to build strength.

2010 Associate Campaign

2010 Associate Campaign - Going Above and Beyond

The 2010 Associate Campaign has been exciting since its launch on April 22!  It is even more exciting to announce our final total of $351,283. Thank you for Going Above and Beyond to exceed the goal of $325,000 with this amazing amount. Equally impressive is that 38 percent of our associates gave through this campaign, far exceeding the national average of 30 percent. This speaks volumes to your generosity and care for those in need.

The large majority of employees designated their gifts to benefit the Employee Financial Assistance Fund, with almost $245,000 directed to this program. Additionally, almost $70,000 was directed to serve others through our Patient Financial Assistance program. In the current fiscal year, we have assisted over 1,100 people through these programs – a 20 percent increase over last fiscal year!

Thanks to all who gave in support of this annual campaign and kudos to our outstanding Executive Committee members and campaign volunteers for a job extremely well done.

Hour Club gifts have been distributed.  For the associates who work the night shift and have not received their Hour Club gift, the Foundation staff will come to your department on July 8 around 11 p.m. to midnight and will bring your gift. If you participated in the 2010 Associate Campaign at the Hour Club level and did not receive your gift, please contact the Foundation at 776-7760.

Meet Dr. Beggs

Join me in welcoming cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Martin Beggs, to the Penrose-St. Francis family. Dr. Beggs joins Penrose Cardiothoracic Surgery after 12 years in private practice in Sarasota, Florida. He specializes in diseases of the heart and aorta. As a surgeon, he collaborates with each patient’s primary care physician and cardiologist to create a comprehensive care plan, focusing on the patient’s entire course of treatment, including pre- and postoperative care.

His expertise includes:

• Minimally invasive aortic valve replacement
• Bloodless and blood conserving cardiac surgery
• High risk coronary artery bypass
• Aortic aneurysm dissection repair
• Extensive experience with geriatric cardiac surgery patients

Dr. Beggs, his wife, Dr. Karen Chang, and their three children (15, 13 and 11 years old) are in the process of making the transition from Florida to Colorado. “We are really looking forward to doing all of the activities Colorado is known for, such as skiing and hiking,” said Dr. Beggs. When he is not caring for patients, he spends most of his time with his family at the kid’s activities or out on the golf course.

Dr. Beggs, Board Certified in Cardiothoracic Surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School in Houston and completed his general surgery residency at University of Texas-Houston.  He completed his cardiac training at Texas Heart Institute under Dr. Denton Cooley and his thoracic oncological training was done at MD Anderson.

Dr. Beggs joins the surgical practice with Dr. John Mehall and Dr. Matthew Blum.

PSF Art Show

At a recent lunch with Margaret, associates expressed interest in learning more about the wonderful artwork that decorates our hospitals. This is a weekly series featuring the artwork and historical pieces seen in our hospitals.

The three Brass Screens by Bill Hardy are located outside the garden level meeting rooms at SFMC. These pieces were reported to have been commissioned by Julie Penrose. They were placed in the main lobby of the Glockner/Penrose Hospital in 1959 to screen the elevators from the information desk. After several moves over the years, the pieces were put in crates and stored until a new home was created for them at SFMC.
During the grand opening of SFMC in 2008, Blll Hardy's daughter brought him out to see the new place of honor for his 50 year old creation.

Laughter is the best medicine

This is a weekly series of fun stories and jokes to help brighten your day and put a smile on your face.

A kindergartner was practicing spelling
A kindergartner was practicing spelling with magnetic letters on the refrigerator: cat, dog, dad, and mom had been proudly displayed for all to see.

One morning while getting ready for the day, he bounded into the room with his
arms outstretched. In his hands were three magnetic letters: G-O-D.

“Look what I spelled, Mom!” with a proud smile on his face.

“That's wonderful!” his mom praised him. “Now go put them on the fridge so Dad
can see when he gets home tonight.”

The mom happily thought that her son's Catholic education was certainly having
an impact. Just then, a little voice called from the kitchen: “Mom? How do you spell
‘zilla’?”

Pearly Gates
A minister dies and is waiting in line at the Pearly Gates.

Ahead of him is a guy who's dressed in sunglasses, a loud shirt, leather jacket, and jeans.

Saint Peter addresses this guy, "Who are you, so that I may know whether or not to admit you to the Kingdom of Heaven?"

The guy replies, "I'm Joe Cohen, taxi driver, of Noo Yawk City."

St. Peter consults his list.

He smiles and says to the taxi driver, "Take this silken robe and golden staff and enter the Kingdom of Heaven."

The taxi driver goes into Heaven with his robe and staff, and it's the minister's turn.

He stands erect and booms out, "I am Joseph Snow, pastor of Calvary for the last forty-three years."

St Peter consults his list.

He says to the minister, "Take this cotton robe and wooden staff and enter the Kingdom of Heaven."

"Just a minute," says the minister. "That man was a taxi driver, and he gets a silken robe and golden staff. How can this be?"

"Up here, we work by results," says Saint Peter. "While you preached, people slept; while he drove, people prayed."
