40% Less...
Up to 40 Percent Less Radiation Exposure
The Associated Press ran a story on June 14 titled Americans get too much medical radiation.
“Americans get the most medical radiation in the world, even more than people in other rich countries. The U.S. accounts for half of the most advanced procedures that use radiation, and the average American's dose has grown sixfold over the past couple of decades. Too much radiation raises the risk of cancer.”
Marilynn Marchione, The Associated Press, 06/14/2010
Penrose Hospital and St. Francis Medical Center now have low-dose radiation computerized axial tomography (CAT) scanners that cut patients’ radiation exposure by up to 40 percent compared to traditional scanners. We are proud to be the first and only in southern Colorado to bring this new technology to our patients.
The Imaging and Radiology Centers at Penrose-St. Francis use the GE Healthcare LightSpeed™ VCT system which enables them to drastically reduce radiation levels while maintaining quality images. The system employs a new and advanced image reconstruction technique that dramatically reduces radiation dose to patients. This radiation reduction is especially beneficial to children who require a CAT scan and patients who may need multiple imaging tests, such as cancer patients, and women of child-bearing age.
The systems provide physicians with the most detailed images possible, while patients receive the minimal amount of radiation exposure necessary for their particular exam. (Please note that exposure may vary due to patient size and scanning protocol.)

Department Spotlight

Finally…..it’s meal time – let’s head down to the cafeteria for some nutritious goodies. We all do that a couple of times a day, but let’s stop a minute and take a peek behind the scenes.
Today, we want to recognize Nutrition Services at St. Francis Health Center as our Department in the Spotlight. Liz Benavidz is the manager and she says she is blessed to work with exceptional people in her department. Her associates cover the span from six months in nutrition services to the very special, Cesar Mitchell, who has worked at St. Francis Hospital (Health Center) for 47 years! Cesar is one of those rare individuals who came to work at St. Francis one day and stuck by her through thick and thin for 47 years. But Cesar says this is the end of the road for him – he started with St. Francis and he will finish with St. Francis once the lights are turned out at the end of this year. His wife, Betty, works in Nutrition Services at Penrose Main so we are doubly blessed by their service.
In addition to Liz, there are 10 staff members that prepare a whopping 150 patient trays every single day and many of those with special requests. Plus, you can always find something good to eat in the cafeteria during meal times as well. One of the things they take pride in is, “If we can make it from scratch, that’s what we’ll do, using the freshest ingredients we can find.” Seems to be more than just a job for them.
It’s not just the people that set this group apart. The SFHC cafeteria has one of the most spectacular views from anywhere in our city. It’s not only our associates that enjoy this little gem, there are regulars from the Gazette that share a meal in the St. Francis cafeteria every day just to enjoy the food and take in the view.
Since they prepare trays for Select and Pikes Peak Hospice and some of these patients have longer stays, they honor all special requests the patients may have. Liz shared a story of a man in Hospice that was special to the Nutrition Services group. Every day while he was with them, he requested two hot dogs with 6 mustard packs, Lays potato chips and a Pepsi. What’s most interesting is that he had that meal for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They got such a kick of him, they rented some hot dog costumes, delivered his tray in costume and everyone sang, “Oh I wish I were an Oscar Mayer wiener….”
Another lady said all she wanted was HiC, so Liz went to nine stores but finally found her HiC. It is very gratifying to fulfill those special requests.
One of the nicest things to happen to them as a group (before the Department in the Spotlight honors, of course) was winning the 2007 Food Safety Excellence Award in the category of institutions from the Health Department. They beat out other hospitals, nursing homes and schools for this honor. So, let us add our appreciation for all Nutrition Services at St. Francis Health Center does for associates, patients, families and guests every day. Thanks for the good food and good friends. Did you know Bob Husband is retiring?

After almost 30 years at PSF, Bob Husband, construction coordinator, is retiring. Most of you may know Bob from the construction and opening of SFMC. He considers that the biggest project of his career. He was also instrumental in the construction of the E-Tower at Penrose among countless other construction and remodeling projects over the years. I recently had the pleasure of working with Bob in his role as a member of the art committee at SFMC. I did my best to capture as much of his knowledge of the artwork as I could. (That is where the information for the PSF Art Show in the Pulse each week comes from) We all wish him the best of luck as he moves back to Iowa to be with his kids and grandkids.
Thanks Bob!

New Crash Carts
Did you say Cart Crash?
No, I said that we now have new Crash Carts!

If you have ever responded to a Code Blue, you know our old crash carts were difficult to maneuver and were not very efficient. The Code Blue Committee took on a two-year project to reevaluate the entire system - incuding the actual carts and what goes into them. Recently, new crash carts were implemented throughout the hospital.
Special thanks to Jennifer Robertson, Olinda Spitzer, Deb Osborn and Bill Lowes for their work on this project. Back to Top

PSF Art Show
At a recent lunch with Margaret, associates expressed interest in learning more about the wonderful artwork that decorates our hospitals. This is a weekly series featuring the artwork and historical pieces seen in our hospitals.

Located on the Garden Level of SFMC, just around the corner from the public elevators, is this brass and acrylic depiction of the rooster that crowed at Christ's crucifixion. This piece of art came from the chapel at Penrose Hospital. It hung as part of the alter wall hangings in the Chapel since 1960 and was removed when the Chapel was razed to build the E-Tower in 2003.

Heart Walk 2010
As you can tell by the winter coats people are wearing in the photos below, this year's Heart Walk was overshadowed by the cold and rain. Despite the weather, hundreds of people found their way to the Air Force Academy for this annual fundraising event for the American Heart Association.

Laughter is the best medicine
This is a weekly series of fun stories and jokes to help brighten your day and put a smile on your face.
Ten Commandments
A Sunday school teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with her five and six year olds. After explaining the commandment to "honor thy father and thy mother," she asked "Is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?" Without missing a beat one little boy answered, "Thou shall not kill."
Little Johnny In Church
One Sunday morning, the priest noticed Little Johnny was staring up at the large plaque that hung in the foyer of the church. It was covered with names, and small American flags were mounted on either side of it. The seven-year old had been staring at the plaque for some time, so the priest walked up, stood beside the boy, and said quietly, "Good morning, Little Johnny."
"Good morning, Father," replied the young man, still focused on the plaque. "Father Scott, what is this?" Little Johnny asked. "Well, son, it's a memorial to all the young men and women who died in the service." Soberly, they stood together, staring at the large plaque. Little Johnny's voice was barely audible when he asked, "Which service, the 9:45 or the 11:15?"
Children's Notes to God
A nun asked her class to write notes to God. Here are some of the notes the children handed in:
Dear God: I didn't think orange went with purple until I saw the sunset you made on Tuesday. That was cool.
Dear God: Instead of letting people die and having to make new ones, why don't You just keep the ones You have?
Dear God: Maybe Cain and Abel would not have killed each other so much if they had their own rooms. That's what my Mom did for me and my brother.
Dear God: If You watch me in church on Sunday, I'll show You my new shoes.
Dear God: I bet it is very hard for You to love all of everybody in the whole world. There are only 4 people in our family and I'm having a hard time loving all of them.
Dear God: In school they told us what You do. Who does it when You're on vacation?
Dear God: Is it true my father won't get in Heaven if he uses his bowling words in the house?
Dear God: Did You mean for the Giraffe to look like that or was it an accident?
Dear God: I went to this wedding and they kissed right in the church. Is that okay?
Dear God: Did You really mean "do unto others as they do unto you"? Because if You did, then I'm going to get my brother good.
Dear God: Thank You for the baby brother, but what I prayed for was a puppy.
Dear God: Please send me a pony. I never asked for anything before. You can look it up.
Dear God: You don't have to worry about me; I always look both ways.
