2010 Associate Campaign
2010 Associate Campaign - Going Above and Beyond
Our 2010 Associate Campaign goal of $325,000 is no longer in sight, because we are well on our way to the $365,000 raised last year! We challenged those who hadn’t returned their pledge form to consider participating with a gift and several have done just that. We thank you! The associates and patients who will receive financial assistance thank you! We are proud that the PSF associate participation rate is far above the national average – you send a strong message of support and encourage additional giving from external donors and funding sources.

Hour Club gifts will be distributed on June 15 at Penrose Hospital and June 16 at St. Francis Medical Center. We will have tables set up by the West elevators at Penrose Hospital and in the cafeteria at St. Francis Medical Center from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and 6 p.m. -9 p.m. Please mark your calendar to pick your gift up if you donated at the Hour Club level. Associates at Namaste, Medalion and Home Health, your gifts will be delivered to these facilities on June 17. For the associates who work the night shift at the hospitals, the Foundation staff will deliver your gift to your department, during the night shift hours, the week of June 21.
Invitations for the Decade of Caring luncheon went out on June 4 to those who have contributed every year for the past 10 years. If you are part of this distinguished group and received an invitation to the luncheon, please let the Foundation know if you are able to attend, along with the location you intend to be at.
For more information regarding the 2010 Associate Campaign, please see one of the Executive Committee members or Campaign Volunteers (wearing red ribbons) or contact Penrose-St. Francis Health Foundation at 776-7760. Back to Top

Did you know?
Did you see these stories in the Gazette last week?
Springs teen makes semi-finals in national bee
Brian King, 13, of Colorado Springs, waits to compete Thursday in the National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC
'Caprifig' knocks Springs boy out of spelling bee's semifinals
I read these stories thinking how neat it was that someone from Colorado Springs had made it to the Scripps National Spelling Bee. I was even more interested in the story when I found out that Brian’s mom works here. Cynthia is a patient access coordinator at SFMC.
“Brian started competing in the state spelling bee three years ago,” said Cynthia. “He was 21st the first year, 5th last year and, of course, he won this year.”
Brian, 13, is an eighth-grader at the online Colorado Connections Academy. This was the last year he was eligible because the competition is only for students through the 8th grade.
After winning the state competition, he and his family enjoyed a week in Washington D.C. I asked if they got to enjoy the sights. “We got to see a little bit but they kept us pretty busy all week with the competition,” said Cynthia.
What is a spelling bee like? The national spelling bee starts with round one where each student takes a written 50-word test. Only 25 of those words count for score, one point each. The next two rounds are oral, and each speller gets three bonus points for spelling a word correctly. At the end of round three, the judges decide where the cut-off will be for the semi-finals. This year, only 48 of the 273 spellers advanced to the semi-finals. From then on, it is simply one word at a time; spell it right and move on, spell it wrong and you’re done. Brian made it all the way through round five out of eight. He ended up tied for 20th.
Want to test your abilities? According to the Scripps National Spelling Bee Web site, some of the spellers' favorite words include schadenfreude, pfeffernuss and onomatopoeia. To learn more about this event, go to spellingbee.com.

First and Main Concert Series

Penrose-St. Francis is again sponsoring the First and Main Free Summer Concert Series.
The series kicked off last week with a great concert by The Jake Loggins Band. Nutrition Services from SFMC was there and shared samples of Jerked Chicken and Caribbean Cole Slaw. The event organizers said that they had a record attendance with more than 1700 people.
This event continues every Friday during June and July so make plans to join us. The event takes place at North Carefree and Powers, right in front of the Cinemark Theaters. The concert starts each week at 5 p.m. This week, the Penrose Cancer Center is our featured department.

Recognize this guy? Mark Hartman, COO from SFMC, isn't singing karaoke. He is giving the answers to the trivia contest that qualified people to win a huge fruit basket from the SFMC Dietary Dept. Back to Top

PSF Art Show
At a recent lunch with Margaret, associates expressed interest in learning more about the wonderful artwork that decorates our hospitals. This is a weekly series featuring the artwork and historical pieces seen in our hospitals.

This statue of St. Francis is located directly across from the public entrance of St. Francis Medical Center. It was removed from the entrance of the original St. Francis Hospital, refurbished and placed in the new hospital.

Laughter is the best medicine
This is a weekly series of fun stories and jokes to help brighten your day and put a smile on your face.
The Cleveland Symphony Orchestra was rehearsing Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. There is an extensive section where the bass players don't play for twenty minutes of so. One of them decided that, rather than stand around on stage looking bored and stupid, they'd all just file offstage during their tacit-time and hang out backstage, then return when they were about to play. It seemed like a good idea at the time.
On the night of the performance, the bass players filed off as planned. The last one had barely left the stage when the leader suggested, "Hey we've got twenty minutes, let's fun across the street to the bar for a few!"
This idea was met with great approval, so off they went, tuxedos and all, to loosen up. Fifteen minutes and a few rounds later, one of the bass players said, "Shouldn't we be heading back? It's almost time."
But the leader announced, "Oh don't worry, we'll have some extra time - I played a little joke on the conductor. Before the performance started, I tied string around each page of his score so that he'd have to untie each page to turn it. The piece will drag on a bit. We've got time for another round!"
So another round they did, and finally - sloshed and staggering - they made their way back across the street to finish Ludwig's 9th.
Upon entering the stage, they immediately noticed the conductor's haggard, drawn and livid expression.
"Gee," one player queried, "Why do you suppose he looks so tense?"
"You'd be tense, too," laughed the leader. "It's the bottom of the ninth, the score is tied and the basses are loaded."

Sister Christine Marie Stahl dies at age 85

Sister of Charity of Cincinnati S. Christine Marie Stahl died Saturday, May 29, 2010, at the age of 85 in Mother Margaret Hall at the Sisters of Charity Motherhouse.S. Christine Marie entered the Congregation in 1943 and was a Sister of Charity for 67 years, serving in education, medical records, clerical and pastoral ministry in the dioceses of Cincinnati, Ohio, Washington, DC, Detroit, Mich., Toledo, Ohio, and Denver, Colo.
Sister served administration needs at Penrose Hospital, Colorado Springs, Colo. from 1972 until March of 1979 when she transitioned to El Pomar Renewal Center, also in Colorado Springs, to work as secretary until 1982.
S. Christine Marie’s friend for more than forty years, Stevie Strock of Denver, remembers, “We met while working at Penrose Hospital and discovered we had similar interests. We both loved the mountains, spending time near babbling brooks. S. Christine Marie was a very holy woman. She loved the concept of God’s love for us and how we should in turn love each other as He does. We discussed her devout prayer life. That was good for me, too,” added Stevie. “Sister was never afraid to stretch herself. She learned the computer and how to drive when she was in her sixties. She had a great sense of humor, played the piano and mastered the art of calligraphy. She was such a kind, gentle woman. I will miss her very much,” said Stevie.
Sister of Charity of Cincinnati, S. Mary Graf remembers her friend: “I have fond memories of Christine. She loved the west and shared that love with all. I am grateful that she touched my heart and life with her gentle spirit and kindness. She truly had a ‘listening heart.’”
Volunteers needed to help with the Healing Garden at Penrose (located in the Courtyard)
If you are available to help plant 350 - 400 plants on Saturday morning, June 19th, the healing garden volunteers could sure use your help! The plants will arrive Friday afternoon and will be placed in position and well watered, so on Saturday they'll just need to be planted. Most of the plants are one gallon with a few five gallon specimens so it should go pretty fast. If you can help - please bring a shovel, gardening gloves, a watering can, hat, sunscreen and water to the courtyard. Planting will probably start by 8 a.m. so anytime you can help that morning will be greatly appreciated.
