2010 Associate Campaign
2010 Associate Campaign - Going Above and Beyond
Our 2010 Associate Campaign balloon continues to go higher and higher above the $325,000 goal reached last week. In fact, we are climbing towards the $365,000 raised last year! We are proud that the PSF associate participation rate is far above the national average – you send a strong message of support and encourage additional giving from external donors and funding sources.
All pledge forms returned to the Foundation office by May 7th were entered into a random drawing for a prize, a hot air balloon ride or a Wii, at the winner’s choosing. Clo Frederick, who works with Health at Home, was our winner and she chose the Wii game system. CONGRATULATIONS, CLO!

Invitations for the Decade of Caring luncheon went out late last week to those who have contributed every year for the past 10 years. If you have contributed for the past nine consecutive years, your gift this year qualifies you for this distinguished group and you will be receiving an invitation to our luncheon at the end of June.
Hour Club gifts will be distributed on June 15 at Penrose Hospital and June 16 at St. Francis Medical Center. We will have tables set up by the West elevators at Penrose Hospital and in the cafeteria at St. Francis Medical Center from 11 a.m. -3 p.m. and 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. Please mark your calendar to pick your gift up if you donated at the Hour Club level. For the associates who work the night shift, the Foundation staff will deliver your gift to your department, during the night shift hours, the week of June 21.
For more information regarding the 2010 Associate Campaign, please see one of the Executive Committee members or Campaign Volunteers (wearing red ribbons) or contact Penrose-St. Francis Health Foundation at 776-7760. Back to Top

Disaster Drill
On Saturday, PSF participated in a community wide mass casualty disaster drill. The simulation was a tornado in Hanover with as many as 150 people injured. Both Penrose and St. Francis Medical Center received actor/patients from the drill.
Thanks to everyone who came in extra on Saturday to help with the drill. Overall, the drill went very well at both facilities. We were able to learn things that will help us if we receive patients from a real mass casualty situation.

Connected Care
Centura Health Launches Connected Care Rural Telehealth Initiative
This June, Centura Health will launch a new rural telehealth initiative – Connected Care, which is being offered in partnership with OptumHealth, a division of UnitedHealthcare. This ground breaking telehealth initiative seeks to improve rural access to care through the use of sophisticated high-definition video technology that delivers a telehealth experience remarkably similar to an in-person visit with a doctor. Connected Care is being launched in four rural markets including Lamar, Buena Vista, Leadville and Del Norte allowing patients to access specialized medical care from Centura Health’s network of specialists without traveling long distances.
To date, specialists affiliated with the Centura Health network of care at St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center in Pueblo and Littleton Adventist Hospital and St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver have committed to participating in the Connected Care program. Specialty care provided includes gastroenterology, cardiology, pulmonary disease, neurosurgery, general surgery and otolaryngology. Additional specialty areas and locations will be added in the future.
“This initiative is important on many levels”, said Dr. Camille Azar, a gastroenterologist with St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center. “It provides much needed care to patients in rural locations who might otherwise need to travel over 100 miles to receive care. And it is an added convenience for specialists who often travel to these locations each month to ensure follow-up care for patients.”
Connected Care is easy and convenient for both physicians and patients. As with a typical physician visit, patients schedule an exam at one of the rural locations. All participating facilities have a dedicated exam room equipped with state-of-the-art high definition audio, video and remote monitoring equipment and is staffed by an on-site clinician. During the exam, the Centura Health specialist can see and interact with the patient in remarkably the same way they would for an in-person visit, through the use of remote diagnostic tools like a remote stethoscope or otoscope, administered by the clinician at the local clinic. Connected Care also utilizes sophisticated software to allow for seamless scheduling and one-click connection.
“Connected Care allows me to conduct a thorough exam that parallels an office visit”, said Dr. Bernard Guiot, a neurosurgeon with Littleton Adventist Hospital. “The high definition exam camera and telemetry devices allow for an accurate yet personal visit between the patient and physician.”
Connected Care directly benefits patients, primary care and specialty physicians, all of whom sometimes travel long distances to connect for in-person visits. Connected Care also helps rural providers and participating specialists to expand their practices and engage new patients.
Connected Care is a unique collaboration between Centura Health, UnitedHealthcare, and the State of Colorado, with assistance from two non-profit organizations, the Colorado Rural Health Center and the Colorado Community Health Network. These organizations have united to improve health care access, ensure quality of care regardless of geography and advance the efficiency and effectiveness of health care throughout the state.
For more information about Connected Care, visit www.centura.org/connectedcare. Physicians interested in participating in this program should contact Bob Wallace, director of rural health outreach at bobwallace@centura.org or 303.804.8248.

PSF Art Show
At a recent lunch with Margaret, associates expressed interest in learning more about the wonderful artwork that decorates our hospitals. This is a weekly series featuring the artwork and historical pieces seen in our hospitals.

On the first floor of St. Francis Medical Center you will find the 13 panels of Mike Esch's lenticular wall. The lighted glass panels are scenes photographed on the eastern plains of El Paso County and transferred to the glass panels. Mike painted the sky. The track lighting allows the scenes to appear and disappear as you walk by. If you look closely, there are three images hidden in the image - Harry Hoth (the sponsor of the piece), Rick O'Connell (former PSF CEO) and a race car. Look carefully because even if you know where they are, you have to be at just the right angle to see them. Good luck.

Pikes Peak Workforce Center Interns Visit Penrose St. Francis

Tony Switzer provided a tour and discussion of Cyberknife technology
On June 1, Penrose-St. Francis hosted the kick-off visit for the Pikes Peak Workforce Center (PPWFC) interns participating in a unique learning opportunity called The Industrial Revolution. It is a job readiness program for young adults, which has gained state-wide recognition for its innovation. The fifteen youth interns, ranging in age from 17 through 21, selected for this prestigious program take classes in science, technology, engineering, math, and business ethics at the workforce center in the mornings. In the afternoons, these interns visit various business sites to gain direct exposure to in-demand industries.
After an initial welcome from Diana Patterson, Education Resources, and Debra Nussdorfer, Magnet Coordinator, a discussion followed of the interns’ areas of interest in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, counseling, mechanical engineering, computer design and business. A demonstration was provided of different training equipment used for clinical education, including the simulation mannequin. The interns enjoyed listening to heart and lung sounds while checking for various pulses. Information was provided regarding the complexity of this high-fidelity training equipment, as well as its usefulness in education and the opportunities for the future.
Incorporating the interns’ diverse interest areas, a PowerPoint presentation of the DaVinci robotic surgical equipment was given by Patrick O’Neal, Clinical Sales Representative from Intuitive Surgical. Many questions ensued regarding the types of surgeries, training of the surgeons and visions for the upcoming decades. Staying with the cutting edge trends in medical care, Tony Switzer provided a tour and discussion of Cyberknife technology. The interns were enthralled with the possibilities for career direction within the healthcare system.
Last year, Penrose St. Francis and 16 other Pikes Peak area businesses invited these youth to tour their facilities and learn firsthand about a variety of 21st century industries. Back to Top

Laughter is the best medicine
This is a weekly series of fun stories and jokes to help brighten your day and put a smile on your face.
It's a very simple operation
A man was wheeling himself frantically down the hall of the hospital in his wheelchair, just before his operation. A nurse stopped him and asked, "What's the matter?"
He said, "I heard the nurse say, 'It's a very simple operation, don't worry, I'm sure it will be all right.'"
"She was just trying to comfort you, what's so frightening about that?"
"She wasn't talking to me. She was talking to the doctor!"
You told her what?
A woman went to doctors office where she was seen by one of the new doctors. After about 4 minutes in the examination room, she burst out, screaming as she ran down the hall. An older doctor stopped her and asked what the problem was, and she told him her story.
After listening, he had her sit down in another room and told her to relax. The older doctor marched down hallway to the back where the first doctor was and demanded, "What's the matter with you? Mrs. Terry is 63 years old, she has four grown children and seven grandchildren, and you told her she was pregnant?"
The new doctor calmly continued to write on his clipboard and without looking up said, "Does she still have the hiccups?" Back to Top

St. Mary’s High School Senior Partners with Local Non-Profit to Make a Difference
Written by Katey L. Burdick
An outgoing St. Mary’s High School Senior and Eagle Scout Candidate, Matt Geiger, heard about SET Family Medical Clinics, a non-profit organization, and their “Suitcase Campaign” when looking for an Eagle project to achieve his Eagle Scout rank. His Scout Master and good friend John Combs had brought SET Family Medical Clinics and this special project to his attention.
The Suitcase campaign was a small and simple fundraiser that SET Family Medical Clinics began in January of 2009. It was created to collect personal hygiene items for SET’s Homeless Clinic and Ex-Offender Program patients. During its inception the staff never could have imagined what this High School Senior was capable of and how much he would grow and expand the project.
“I met with Mrs. Cronin (Director of Development at SET) about the SET Suitcase Drive because it really seemed like a good cause, to get these essential hygiene items to the people who need them, things that I take for granted.” Matt shared.
Matt is exactly right, these little items such as toothpaste, disposable razors, deodorant, lotion, shampoo etc. most people don’t give a second thought to when using them. Those very items are the ones that can make a huge difference in a less fortunate person’s life.
A couple weeks after Matt took on this project SET had caught word that he was doing something far above and beyond what SET ever dreamed this simple campaign would be. He began leading volunteers in speaking about SET and the Suitcase Campaign to different churches and at his own school. Matt and his volunteers also set up collection points to accept donations at various locations. As the donations came in, they would bring them back to his family’s garage to be sorted.
Matt was amazed with the response he received “I was really impressed with all the support I received from friends, family and complete strangers. They really donated a lot and I couldn't thank them enough.”
Matt went on to collect items for about two months “People are still giving me things” he says. After the initial donations were collected Matt and his fellow scouts began to assemble the items into individual hygiene kits. At the end of the project they had assembled 436 hygiene kits and received over $400 in cash donations.
“I hadn't heard about the SET Clinic until I started the project but it was fun working with them, they have a great program and I admire them deeply for the work that they're doing.” Matt Geiger
Scott and Angie Geiger also definitely deserve a bit of acknowledgement for letting their home be a hub for this massive project. “It was a pleasure for Matt to do his project in support of the clinic. Barb was so good to work with and he really felt it was worthwhile.” Angie Geiger
SET hopes Matt’s story encourages people to be more involved in their community. Anyone can get involved; you don’t have to be as ambitious as Matt to make a difference. Donations and support of any kind big or small are a huge help in SET’s efforts to serve the uninsured, underinsured and low income people in our community. The clinics are always in need of deodorant, chap sticks, cough drops, socks, razors ect. For more information on how you can make a difference and even start your own campaign. Visit the SET Family Medical Clinics website at WWW.SETOFCS.ORG or call 719-776-8850.
Congratulations to Matt on a project well done & for achieving the well deserved rank of Eagle Scout!
