2010 Associate Campaign

Rounding the Corner

Many patients have been helped through the monies raised through the Associate Campaign, including one who had a skin reaction and acquired a very painful condition that caused her to lose the top layer of her skin. Through the Patient Financial Assistance Program, she was able to have antibiotics administered to her at home.

The 2010 Associate Campaign is very close to achieving the $325,000 goal! We are almost at the $300,000 mark!  Thank you to all who have put us at this milestone.

The Campaign has been extended for one week to include as many associates in the early incentive drawing as possible.  So – if you haven’t returned your pledge form, there is still time to participate! We hope you will consider a gift to ensure our associates and patients have assistance when faced with an unexpected crisis. Every donation is important, regardless of amount.

In past weeks we’ve shared stories of associates who’ve received financial assistance through the Sisters of St. Francis Associate Assistance Program. If you find yourself in an unforeseen crisis or unanticipated hardship, help may be available to you through this program.  Eligibility guidelines:
• Must be employed with PSF for at least 12 months
• Be in good standing with HR (no corrective action within the last 6 months)
• No current loan balance with the Foundation
• No assistance received through this program within the last 12 months.

Funds are awarded either through grants (not paid back) or interest-free loans (paid back through payroll deduction). Funds awarded are paid to the creditor and not to the individual. For more information regarding the 2010 Associate Campaign, please see one of the Executive Committee members or Campaign Volunteers (wearing red ribbons) or contact Penrose-St. Francis Health Foundation at 776-7760.

EMS Week

Each year in May, Emergency Medical Services communities from across the nation join together to celebrate EMS Week. The provision of emergency medical services is a high-risk profession and more than 20 percent of the Colorado-certified emergency personnel from both rural and urban communities are volunteers. These dedicated individuals must have specialized training and ongoing education to ensure the best emergency care for Colorado. Please recognize Colorado EMS professionals through your show of support and celebrate EMS Week May 16-22, 2010.

The 18th Annual National EMS Memorial Service will take place on June 26, 2010 at 6 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Colorado Springs. The mission of the National EMS Memorial Service is to honor and remember those men and women of America's Emergency Medical Services who have given their lives in the line of duty and to recognize the sacrifice they made in service to their communities. Please join us in remembering our fallen colleagues. www.nemsms.org

There will also be a special one-day bike ride on June 25. The ride starts in Denver and ends in Colorado Springs at Antlers Park. It is another way to show support for the National EMS Memorial Service and the families of the honorees. For more information see www.muddyangels.org

Department Spotlight

The Rewards and Recognition is delighted to recognize the Patient Transport Department at St. Francis Medical Center. This is a small department comprised of one full-time employee: Arne Severson and four part-time employees: Melissa Dupont, Daniel Manger, Stacy Jasper and their newest addition, Michael Skolnicki. They also have the invaluable support of volunteers Mike Gamer, Lindsey McClurg, Terry Hoops, Kelli Messenger, Gary Heintz, Janelle Weed, Fina Russell, Graham Gollan, and Jena Brunner.

According to their manager, Teri Schofield, this is a group of “self-starters.” Due to the nature of the job, each team member must be able to work independently. To be adept at this fast paced job they must have patience, good time management and communication skills, and the ability to efficiently prioritize patient transports in the order of their urgency or scheduled procedure times. In addition to responding to calls for patient transport, the team members are cleaning equipment between transports, insuring that all equipment is in good working order, and stocking all the nursing units with oxygen tanks to be used during transports. During slow periods, they assist nursing staff with patient care by answering call lights. For this reason, staff members are required to be CNA’s. The volunteers are invaluable because they are able to transport patients that are more alert or are discharging from the facility. They also assist when a second person is needed to complete the transport.

Always, safety first!  Prior to a transport, the staff members are provided with a SBARQ form prepared by the patient’s nursing staff.  The transport team refers to this form as the patient’s “ticket to ride.” SBARQ stands for Situation, Background, Assessment, Response, Questions.  The form includes information detailing the patient’s specific needs such as their fall risk or whether they need oxygen during the transport.

Every transport is different and some are more time intensive because of the individual needs of the patient and their destination. The team transports patients throughout the campus, including services provided by the Audubon ASC, Penrad and even private physician offices in Sisters Grove Pavilion and the Women’s Surgery Center in the Northcare Building. The team estimates that the greatest numbers of transports are to and from the Surgery Department and Radiology or Penrad for imaging services such as MRI, CT scan, and Ultrasound.

The most valuable asset of all team members, both volunteer and staff members alike, is their people skills. They are able to comfort and reassure our patients when they are at their most vulnerable. They enjoy their everyday interactions with fellow associates throughout the hospital and their patients.  They consider everyone to be their “customer” and strive to provide efficient, on-time service everyday.

Fun Facts:
• Hours of operation: Monday through Friday 0700-1930 and Saturday and Sunday 0800-1630.
• Average 35-50 transports daily.
• When the census is high, that number can rise above 70 transports a day.
• Highest monthly volume to date= 1295 transports.
• They completed 14,862 transports during their first year (mid August 2008-September 2009)
• National Patient transport week in November

Congratulations for being this months Department in the Spotlight!

Even when I was trying to take his picture, Arne got called for another patient transport.

Meet your Leaders

This is a weekly column where you can meet your Penrose-St. Francis leaders.

Charlie has an addiction. He even considers it a sickness sometimes. The Charlie I am referring to is Charlie Stine, director of rehabilitation, and his addiction is golf.  “I enjoy working out, hiking and biking...but golf is my addiction,” said Charlie. You will most likely find him out on the golf course on a warm weekend. Even when you run into him in the halls, don’t be surprised when the conversation turns to golf. Yes, I would consider it an addiction.

As much as I know Charlie would love to spend all of his time playing golf, like the rest of us, he has to work and we are lucky that he chose to work here at PSF with us. I asked him how he got started in rehab. “Shortly after my 20th birthday, I realized that I wasn't going to make a living singing and dancing, and my dreams of playing in the NBA had faded, so I enlisted in the US Air Force...one of the three best choices I ever made,” said Charlie. “I enjoyed every day of my 22 year career. The Air Force afforded many opportunities. I was an athletic trainer at the United States Air Force Academy, a curriculum developer/instructor for the Air Force Physical Therapy Assistant program and I had the honor of serving as enlisted advisor to the Air Force Physical Therapy Corps Chief for the last eight years of my career.”

He and his wife, Cindy, have been married for 26 years. “She traveled around with me wherever the Air Force took us,” said Charlie. “Our daughter, Melissa, is a CNA at PSF and is attending nursing school.”

Charlie joined PSF in 2006 to fill a new position as rehab admissions coordinator. A short time later he became the director of rehabilitation, a position he has held for almost three years.

“I enjoy being around people and it gives me satisfaction providing our clinicians the tools they need to provide great patient care,” said Charlie.  “I have a great group of professionals in my department. I have been blessed with an outstanding leadership team who do a great job with the daily clinical operations. The part of my job that I enjoy most is being out among the folks who do the work; therapists, techs, nurses and support staff.”

Charlie has another problem. When I asked him what keeps him up at night, he didn’t miss a beat with his answer; the dog next door!

HIIP Success Story

Karen Clements, Nutrition Services

I prefer to call my story “A Success In Progress” because this is the beginning of a new lifestyle for me. Prior to starting this new routine, I was having problems walking from the parking garage to my office. I was ashamed to walk with anyone because I could hear myself huffing for air as we were walking down the hallway at a normal stride. When I would try to walk my dogs at home, I could barely make it around the block and I found myself stopping to stretch because my muscles were cramping so badly.  I was very ill and I knew I needed to do something but didn’t want to put any effort into making a change. One of my largest fears was feeling hungry.  I went to a HIIP “Lunch N Learn” where Margaret Sabin, PSF CEO, made the statement, “Only eat food that you know what it is.”  A light went off in my head; that should be simple enough! She also spoke about motivation and getting my body moving. I was allowed to join the “Biggest Loser” at my husband’s work and be his teammate. My husband has lost 89 lbs and he is a huge support and source of encouragement for me.  I weighed in on Fri, Jan 4, 2010 and began my passage to a healthier me by watching what I eat, exercising, and making a decision to become and stay healthy.

I began by using a free program on the Web called caloriecount.com. I thought I had been making healthy choices but I was amazed at the caloric intake I was eating on a daily basis.  I now log daily everything I put in my mouth; even the bad choices I sometimes make. I only eat whole-wheat flour for my breakfast and lunches, for my dinners I eat a protein and vegetables. I do my best to steer clear of sugars and sweeteners because I have found that when I eat them, I crave more food.

Going to the gym was like pulling hen’s teeth for me.  It was something I just didn’t enjoy doing. I began by telling myself that I would go to the gym for 15 minutes a day before I went home from work. Amazingly, once I actually got started, I was able to stay a little longer each day.  Now, I exercise up to 1 hour and 20 minutes 4-5x/week. On my days off, I usually get my exercise by walking two miles with my dogs and my husband.

I have currently lost a total of 46 lbs. Instead of focusing on how much I have to loose, I set goals in small increments. With each goal reached, I reward myself with special things I want and not with food. My journey is now one meal at a time, one step at a time, and one day at a time.

I would love to encourage you to join me… make a commitment during National Employee Health and Fitness Month to get your health in check this month!

Congratulations Karen on your hard work and determination.  You have proven to be committed and know it is an on-going journey.  Keep up the great work and know that we are all here to support you!  -HIIP staff

Lets Go Bowling

Everyone who participated in the PSF Bowling event seemed to have a really good time. We had a great turnout for both the family and adult events. We would like to recognize the 5th floor from Penrose and Langstaff-Brown for having a strong representation.

Our next event is the Sky Sox game coming up in June and then the Picnic in July. Watch for more details.

PSF Study Presented at a National Conference

\

Gisela Herman, RN, from the cardiovascular center, was invited to present at the National Heart Rhythm Society’s conference last Friday. She reported on a one-year case study she did on a new procedure used in the electrophysiology lab to treat patients with atrial fibrillation. We were the first hospital in the country to study this large of a series of patients (68) and we had a 100 percent success rate with the new procedure.

Congratulations to Gisela for being selected to present and special thanks to Dr. Cole for helping with the project.

National Health and Fitness Month

Helping HIIPster:  Howdy Ya’ll!  The Helping HIIPster of the week is Jeanne Wyatt, RN, from the Float Pool!  Jeanne has been involved in the HIIP program since she started here and even though she has now moved to South Dakota that is no excuse that she isn’t actively participating in HIIP.  Once she heard that our annual health screening theme would be a “Healthy Hoedown” she offered to haul her rodeo stuff (saddle, boots, sawhorse, ropes, etc) and load up her vehicle to trek the decorations from South Dakota to Colorado Springs.  Wow – now that is dedication and stewardship!  As she was delivering the stuff, we noticed that one of our volunteers could no longer help that day and Jeanne jumped in to help at the Health Screening!  She is always willing to help in any way she can.  She has volunteered in the HIIP office with special projects and she is the only associate who has attended/watched all 12 Lunch and Learns for the past 3 years in a row!  Thank you, Jeanne, for being our “Helping HIIPster” of the week to celebrate National Employee Health and Fitness Month!

TRIVIA (Helping HIIPster #3):
Breathe…Relax…Can I help you relieve the stress of your busy day in healthcare by signing you up for this amazing benefit?  In a given work day, I might help someone sign up for dental benefits and I help lots of people schedule relaxation. I am an active HIIP participant and I have assisted HIIP everyday for over a year now! I am very involved in a Jazzercise group, too!  Who is this Helping HIIPster and what is this fantastic stress-relieving benefit only PSF has to offer?

PSF Art Show

At a recent lunch with Margaret, associates expressed interest in learning more about the wonderful artwork that decorates our hospitals. This is a weekly series featuring the artwork and historical pieces seen in our hospitals.

The centerpiece of the chapel at SFMC is this bronze crucifix which was designed and cast by Dale Lamphere from Sturgis, South Dakota. The floating crucifix represents a victorious, risen Christ, not the traditional suffering Christ.

Laughter is the best medicine

This is a weekly series of fun stories and jokes to help brighten your day and put a smile on your face.

Father Norton woke up Sunday morning and realizing it was an exceptionally beautiful and sunny early spring day, decided he just had to play golf. So... he told the Associate Pastor that he was feeling sick and convinced him to say Mass for him that day.

As soon as the Associate Pastor left the room, Father Norton headed out of town to a golf course about forty miles away. This way he knew he wouldn't accidentally meet anyone he knew from his parish.

Setting up on the first tee, he was alone. After all, it was Sunday morning and everyone else was in church! At about this time, Saint Peter leaned over to the Lord while looking down from the heavens and exclaimed, "You're not going to let him get away with this, are you?"

The Lord sighed, and said, "No, I guess not."

Just then Father Norton hit the ball and it shot straight towards the pin, dropping just short of it, rolled up and fell into the hole. It WAS A 420 YARD HOLE IN ONE!

St. Peter was astonished. He looked at the Lord and asked, "Why did you let him do that?"

The Lord smiled and replied, "Who's he going to tell?"
