Associate Campaign 2010
Associate Assisted after Life-Changing Event
Where do you go after your home is burglarized, you’re harmed, and the injuries you sustained result in surgery and a pile of bills? If you’re fortunate to work for Penrose-St. Francis, we hope you would turn to the Foundation to request help from the Sisters of St. Francis Associate Assistance Program. And we’re glad that’s what our associate did. When entering her home one evening, our associate surprised burglars who then turned on her. She was severely injured and needed surgery and rehabilitation. With all the resulting bills, she also needed financial help to get her through this crisis. With funds raised through last year’s Associate Campaign for the Associate Assistance program, YOU were there to help! She is most grateful and on the road to recovery.
The 2010 Associate Campaign kicks off this Thursday, April 22. We hope you will consider a gift to ensure our associates and patients have assistance when faced with an unexpected crisis. Every donation is important, regardless of amount. We are proud that the PSF associate participation rate is far above the national average – you send a strong message of support and encourage additional giving from external donors and funding sources.
Beginning Thursday, each associate will receive a pledge form and envelope. When you return your pledge form, you will receive a 4-color click pen in appreciation of your participation. Hour Club members will be able to select one of two Hour Club gift choices – a fleece blanket or mug. To qualify as an Hour Club member, full-time associates donate an hour of pay per pay period and part-time associates donate a half hour of pay per pay period, via payroll deduction. To see a sample of each Hour Club gift option, please see your Executive Committee member covering your cost center.
For more information regarding the 2010 Associate Campaign, please see one of the Executive Committee members or Campaign Volunteers (wearing red ribbons) or contact Penrose-St. Francis Health Foundation at 776-7760. Back to Top

Volunteer Week
Volunteers provide ‘extra special touch’ to patient care
By Margaret Sabin
President & CEO of Penrose-St Francis Health Services
National Volunteer Week is observed April 18-24 around the country, and this year’s theme is a fitting one: “Celebrating People in Action.” Nowhere is that more evident than right here at Penrose-St. Francis Health Services!
I see our people tirelessly committed to improving the health of our communities. And our volunteers are playing an integral role in that mission.
They enhance the quality of care given to our patients by providing an extra special touch. The service our volunteers offer is truly a gift from the heart.
More than 600 volunteers are donating their valuable time in more than 100 departments within Penrose-St. Francis. From our youngest volunteer at 14 years old to our most “experienced” at 97, our volunteers are helping us care for those who are ill and nurturing the health of the people in our communities.
From March 2009 through March 2010, our volunteers provided 83,600 hours of their time, which translates to nearly $1.7 million worth of in-kind services!
Our team’s efforts were recently recognized when HealthGrades named Penrose-St. Francis one of America’s Best 50 Hospitals for the third consecutive year, the only facility to receive the award in Colorado and places us in the top 1 percent of the nation. We simply could not have achieved the award without the tireless efforts of our volunteers.
I’m honored and humbled to be at the helm of an organization that promotes the health and well-being of the people in the communities we serve. Thank you for your dedication to our mission, your valuable time, and your friendship. God bless. Back to Top

Meet Your Executives
This is a weekly column where you can meet your Penrose-St. Francis executives.
Leadership, Vision and Inspiration
Believe it or not, over the past few months we have introduced you to all of the executives at Penrose-St. Francis, except one. President and CEO Margaret Sabin not only oversees Penrose-St. Francis, she is the President of Centura Health South State Group which means she also has oversight of St. Mary Corwin and St. Thomas More.
Ever wondered what a CEO does? I have heard it said that the COO’s job is to make sure the doors are open tomorrow while the CEO’s job is to make sure the doors are open in five years. Coming into my conversation with Margaret with this vague perception of what a CEO does (plus what I have seen on the Apprentice), I wanted to know more about her job.
“My job is to provide support, leadership, vision and inspiration to everyone,” said Margaret. “I do this through the management team, directors, managers, medical staff and all of the support functions. Through this, everyone circles back to our main purpose – our mission of caring for those who are ill and nurturing the health of the people in our community.”
Being the curious person that I am, I thought it would be interesting for her to describe what a day or a week looks like. “If I had to break down a week,” said Margaret, “I would say that I probably spend the equivalent of one day focusing on external issues, such as the community or our other south state facilities. I spend another day working on Centura Health corporate issues. That leaves me only three days each week to focus on what is happening here at Penrose-St. Francis.”
If you attended any of the Town Hall meetings last week, you saw Margaret teaching Boot camp in the video. From what people who attend these classes have told me, Boot camp is a lot of fun and a really tough workout. You don’t see many CEOs living their mission of improving the health of their employees and community like this.
As you can see, fitness is a big part of Margaret’s life. She shared with me that she tries to run a race at least every few months. I imagine that training for these races or going for long walks with her husband helps her stay in shape between Boot camp sessions.
“When I am not at work I am either running or doing something with my kids,” said Margaret. She and her husband Andy have four daughters.
When I asked Margaret for a parting comment, she had this to share with all of us. “Make life fun,” said Margaret. “When it is fun, everything is easier. The hard stuff becomes easier, exercise becomes play and work becomes creative.”
As I was leaving, she had one final piece of advice for us. “Be intentional about life. Take your goals and dreams, imagine them, add in the details and make it happen.”
That’s leadership, vision and inspiration. Thanks Margaret.
Editors note: Even though this is the end of the executive team profiles, this isn’t the end of this column. My plan is to continue with profiles of various directors, key physicians and other interesting people within our organization. If you have a suggestion of someone I should feature in a future editionsof the Pulse, please e-mail me at christophervalentine@centura.org.

2010 Associate Campaign
PSF Leadership Rewards Health Screening Participants with Associate Campaign Donation
About 630 Penrose-St. Francis Health Services associates and volunteers participated in the recent Health Improvement Incentive Program’s free health screenings – the most ever – and PSF leadership is recognizing them with a donation to the PSF Health Foundation’s 2010 Associate Campaign on their behalf.
“Our associates are our most precious asset,” said Margaret Sabin, president and CEO of PSF Health Services, “and this is our way of thanking them for taking the first step towards ‘moving upstream.’ It’s important our associates take care of themselves first so they can be better caretakers of patients in our community.”
PSF Health Services is donating $10 for each of the 498 associates who participated in the health screenings, for a total of $4,980.
Ninety percent of the donation will go to the Sisters of St. Francis Associate Assistance Program at the PSF Health Foundation, according to Diane LeBlanc, president of the Foundation. “This program helps PSF associates in need of financial assistance during unforeseen crises,” she said.
The remaining 10 percent of the total will go to HIIP to offer scholarships and discounts on the extended fitness classes they offer so all associates have the opportunity to participate, regardless of their financial situation.
“We believe in the health of our associates and encourage them to take advantage of the many programs and incentives they have available to them,” said Kristine Barrett, HIIP health promotion coordinator. “We offer everything from a free gym membership and incentive program to classes, massage therapy and much, much more.”
To find out how you can make fitness a part of your daily routine, call Club HIIP at 776-5839. Back to Top

PSF Partners with CSFD for Mass CPR Training
Penrose-St. Francis and the Colorado Springs Fire Department have joined forces with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox to hold a mass CPR training event on Tuesday, May 18th before the Sky Sox game vs. the Round Rock Express.
A successful mass CPR training day, held during EMS Week 2010, may well surpass the Guinness World Record of 6577 currently held by Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. The effort will highlight the importance of community CPR and showcase Colorado Springs as a heart-safe community!
PSF and the Colorado Springs Fire Department are aggressively pursuing community CPR for the following reasons:
• Each year, cardiovascular disease claims the lives of nearly one million people
• One in every three cardiovascular deaths is caused by sudden cardiac arrest
• Almost 80 percent of cardiac arrests occur at home and are witnessed by family members
• Fewer than one in three victims receive bystander CPR
• Bystander CPR more than doubles a victim's chance of surviving a cardiac arrest by maintaining vital blood flow to the heart and brain until more advanced care is available
The mass CPR training event will use the American Heart Association CPR Anytime model and employ the Family & Friends CPR Anytime kits. CPR Anytime was developed because an alternative to traditional CPR classes was needed to reach individuals who wouldn’t normally attend a traditional CPR course, thereby increasing cardiac arrest survival rates. A traditional course takes about four hours – CPR Anytime takes 22 minutes, and, has been shown to be just as effective as a traditional course. Back to Top

ASCENT RN Residency Program
ASCENT RN Residency Program
Every year, Education Resources sponsors 2-3 sessions of the ASCENT RN Residency Program. ASCENT is a standardized Centura program which stands for Autonomy, Safety, Competence, Evidence-Based Practice, Nursing Excellence, and Transition to Practice. This 6-week program is designed for newly practicing nurses and/or nurses returning back-to-practice as a way to assist with their transition into the acute care setting.
The focus of the program is to empower them with the basic tools that they need to get started in their respective areas of work. The nurses (pictured left to right) from the March/April program are:
Amanda Valenzuela (SFMC 5 Medical), Kelly Corbett (PH 5th Floor), Yvette Grijalva (PH 5th Floor), Andrea Gillen (PH 9th Floor), Andrea Klein (PH 5th Floor), Stephanie Feist (CVU), Kendyll Schultz (SFHC Inpatient Behavioral Health), and Kelsey Dennison (SFMC 5 Surgical).
Please welcome these new nurses to Penrose St. Francis and stand ready to support their journey!

Department Spotlight
Department Spotlight: Marketing & Communications
The Penrose-St. Francis Health Services Rewards and Recognition Committee is thrilled to recognize the PSF Marketing and Communications Department as an outstanding group of professionals providing exceptional service to our system.
Johnny Rea leads what he calls the “A-Team” of Marketing and Communications. “We truly have a great story to tell here and our small staff continuously seeks innovative ways to market our services and aggressively communicate our message to the community, media and our associates.”
The department is comprised of four people and some of their responsibilities include strategically marketing PSF services to consumers, communication to associates, liaison to the media, coordinating PSF sponsorships and special events, producing South State’s Vim & Vigor magazine, and maintaining PSF’s public Web site and Facebook page.
Jill Woodford is the Marketing Manager and brings nearly 15 years of health care marketing experience to the team. She is the focal point for the campaigns you may have recently noticed in the community, such as the Trauma and Cardiac marketing campaigns. She also maintains the system’s public web site, www.penrosestfrancis.org and Facebook page, which boasts more than 700 “fans,” more than any other Centura Health entity. “I love logging on to our Facebook page each day and reading comments from our associates and fans,” Jill said. “It really makes you proud to work at PSF.”
Chris Valentine is the newest member of the team and serves as the Public Information Officer. He’s in daily contact with Colorado Springs media, answering their questions and facilitating interviews. Chris is also the editor of the Penrose Pulse, the only weekly web-based e-newsletter for a Centura Health facility (the others are monthly). Readership has skyrocketed over the past 18 months with the number of people regularly checking out the Pulse going from about 1,000 to more than 2,200 the past four weeks. “We’re putting more names and faces in the publication so our associates view it as their ‘hometown newspaper’ and make it something they look forward to seeing every week,” Chris said.
Julie Cox is the Marketing Coordinator and ensures PSF is well-represented in the community by coordinating sponsorships and special events, about 70 each year. “It’s important we participate in these community outreach initiatives as it enhances the organization’s reputation and exposes our services to the consumers,” Julie said. She also maintains the digital communication boards at both Penrose Hospital and St. Francis Medical Center.
Johnny brings more than 26 years of Marketing and Communications experience to the organization, and said he’s “merely driving the ship,” crediting his team with their successes.
Please join us in congratulating the Marketing and Communications Team on their selection as our Department Spotlight, and thank them for their hard work.

Chest Pain Center
Penrose Hospital and St. Francis Medical Center are developing Chest Pain Centers
“Time is muscle” is the axiom frequently associated with those suffering a heart attack. Every minute that the oxygen-deprived heart muscle goes without blood, the more damage and long-term problems it suffers. Because of this dynamic, there has been increasing focus in recent years on making sure that the treatment provided to these patients is as efficient and effective as possible.
Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) is the official name for the sudden blockage or constriction of the arteries that supply the heart muscle with the life-sustaining blood it requires in order to continue to function. Treatment of ACS patients often begins with a 911 call and continues through care by the EMS team, the Emergency Department, the Cath Lab or Open-Heart Surgery team, onto the nursing floors, and finally into outpatient Cardiac Rehab. In an attempt to coordinate and maximize the effectiveness of these diverse elements of care, both Penrose Hospital and St. Francis Medical Center are developing Chest Pain Centers.
A Chest Pain Center is not a physical location within the hospital, but rather an operational model tying together the various services through communication, planning, and process improvement. Within this model, facilities can continually plan, organize and improve the delivery of evidence-based care in a systematic manner to achieve the best possible outcomes for their ACS patients.
As part of this organizational effort, both Penrose Hospital and St. Francis Medical Center will be seeking accreditation as Chest Pain Centers by the Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC). The SCPC has developed stringent standards in order to ensure that these Centers meet or exceed quality-of-care measures based on improving the processes of care. There are currently only six Accredited Chest Pain Centers in Colorado, and none in the southern Colorado region. Only one of these six, Littleton Adventist Hospital, is in the Centura System.
Watch for further news in the months ahead regarding PSF’s progress in this important part of our goal to provide cardiovascular services that are recognized as the highest quality, most accessible, innovative and comprehensive in the region. Back to Top

Donate Life Month 2010

On Monday, April 12, representatives from Donor Alliance and PSF were in the lobby of both Penrose and St. Francis Medical Center with cake, giveaways and lots of information about the importance of organ and tissue donation.

Donor Alliance invited a number of organ recipients to share their experiences with us. Some of you may recognize Patrick Hettle as a volunteer at Penrose. He is also heart transplant survivor. Next week will mark the seventh anniversary of his transplant. Our friends from KXRM Fox 21 news stopped by to learn more about his experience and share his story with the community. Back to Top
