New Benefit Added to Associate Assistance
The Foundation is pleased to announce that Human Resources is joining us in administering our Sisters of St. Francis Associate Assistance Program. Beginning April 1, associates will apply for emergency financial assistance from this program through the Human Resource office instead of the Foundation. Appointments to complete forms and assistance interviews will now be available through HR at both Penrose Hospital and St. Francis Medical Center.
“This will be an added convenience for our associates in need," said Diane LeBlanc, Foundation president. “Associates may apply at either location and they may choose the one closest to their work or home. When someone is experiencing a crisis, they need help quickly and with as little additional stress as possible. This added convenience will ease the process for the associate during an already stressful time. We thank Human Resources for making this possible by partnering with us in this program.”
The Sisters of St. Francis Associate Assistance Program helps employees in need of financial assistance during an unforeseen financial crisis. A crisis or major life event may include a death in the family, or catastrophic events such as fire, major illness or injury. The program is almost exclusively funded by financial contributions from Penrose-St. Francis associates through the annual Associate Campaign.
“Very few companies or organizations in the country have a program like this for their employees," said Margaret Sabin, Penrose-St. Francis president and CEO. "I’m very proud to personally give to our program, and to work with people who demonstrate great care and compassion for each other as well as for our patients.”
To see if you qualify and apply for The Sisters of St. Francis Associate Assistance Program:
1. Review the guidelines to see if you qualify by logging on to My Virtual Workplace. Under the “Reference? tab, select DocuShare / Penrose-St. Francis General Folder / Foundation / Associate Assistance Guidelines.
2. If you qualify, call Human Resources at 776-5996 to schedule an appointment at either Penrose Hospital or St. Francis Medical Center to complete the application form and meet with a representative.
3. After your meeting, the committee will review your request and be in touch with you shortly thereafter. Back to Top

Meet Your Executives
Can you name this executive?
- Spent 21 years active duty in the Air Force
- Has six children
- Practices medicine at CCOM
If you guessed Dr. Peter Walsh, vice president of medical affairs at St. Francis Medical Center, you would be correct.
When talking with Dr. Walsh, the one thing that comes out is his love for his family. He and his wife, Joanne, consider family a critical aspect of life and they have great pride in the relationship they have with their family. Of their six children, there is a 15 year difference between their oldest and youngest: Elizabeth, 20, Kathleen, 18, Peter, 16, John, 11, Caroline, 9, and Megan, 5. If caring for his large family at home isn’t enough, Dr. Walsh also helps care for his parents who live here in Colorado Springs.
Healthcare administration is nothing new to Dr. Walsh. “I served in the US Air Force for 21 years active duty - 25 including reserve time,” said Dr. Walsh. “During that time, I had the opportunity to command two hospitals, Elmendorf Air Force Base and USAF Academy, one large clinic, an ambulatory surgery center and one squadron."
"As an Aerospace Medicine Specialist, I had the opportunity to directly support the Air Force's flying mission,” said Dr. Walsh. “While serving on the Air Force Surgeon General's staff, I led the modernization of the Air Force's deployable medical system which helped save the lives of our deployed members serving in austere locations overseas.”
“Upon retirement from the USAF, I joined Centura in Oct. 2006,” said Dr. Walsh. “I practiced occupational medicine at Centura Center for Occupational Medicine until Dec. 2009 when I entered my current position. I still see patient two to four days per month at CCOM.”
Ever wondered what the vice president of medical affairs at SFMC does? “I serve as a liaison between the Medical Staff and administration at SFMC,” said Dr. Walsh. It is not quite as simple as it sounds. He oversees a variety of programs including clinical quality assurance and quality improvement, clinical case management, medical staff service, medical education and physician contracting.
As you would expect with a physician, he is always thinking about healthcare, in this instance, the future of healthcare. “I am awake nights thinking about how our health care system will change over the next decade - and how to leverage that change in a way that improves the quality of care, improves access, and decreases the waste our current non-integrated system drives.”

Hats for Cancer Patients

How many hats do you see in this picture?
Give up?
The answer is 50. That is how many unique, one-of-a-kind hats the "Creative Crocheters" made and delivered to the Cancer Center for our patients. This group of ladies, who all work in patient access, spend lunch breaks and evenings working on these hats. This isn't their first donation. They have made hats for the Marion House guests and patients at Rocky Mountain Cancer Center.

Saturday, April 24, 2010
Hosted By Penrose-St. Francis
“Let us journey on our way, and I will go alongside you,"
Genesis 33:12
If Cancer is a journey, have you ever felt lost on its path? Has its unknown turns of diagnosis, and survivorship, care giving, and support, left you feeling weary? If so, we invite you to Nourish Your Spirit.
Each year, the Penrose – St. Francis Spiritual Care Department and Cancer Center, host a day-long retreat for cancer patients, survivors and caregivers. This retreat is open and free for the Colorado Springs community, through a generous gift from Walt and Gloria Hallbauer in honor of their daughter Kristen, who was a cancer patient. Whom do you seek?
“Whom do you seek?” “Why do you weep?”
The Gospel of John
These words are taken from one of the narratives that describe the high drama that culminates this final week of the Lenten Season—that is, Holy Week and Easter Sunday. They are said to be words spoken by Jesus to one of the holy women who followed him throughout his ministry. The woman was distraught—practically blind with grief, and loss, having witnessed the events of the crucifixion. These may have been the most welcome words she had ever heard.
Because we work within the walls of hospitals and clinics, we see patients, and their friends and families all the time. They often appear to be lost. Sometimes they are weeping. We are not privy to their story—we don’t know if they have just experienced the death of a loved one. We don’t know if they have just been present at the birth of a baby. We don’t know if they have just received a frightening diagnosis. What we do know is that they need to hear friendly voices saying, “May I help you find something?”, “Is there some way I can be of assistance to you?” “You look upset. May I call someone for you?”
This show of concern, this human connection, these words of compassion. They can make all the difference to so many who come into our hospital system. To so many, these may be some of the most welcoming words they have ever heard. “Whom do you seek? Why do you weep?” “May I help you?” Back to Top

Donate Life Month 2010
Learn more about organ and tissue donation on Monday, April 12 at both Penrose Hospital and St. Francis Medical Center. (Watch for more details)
Donation and Transplantation FAQ
What is National Donate Life Month?
Celebrated every April since 2003, National Donate Life Month is a time to recognize the generosity of those who have saved and enhanced lives by becoming organ, eye and tissue donors and to honor the recipients of their selfless donations.
Who can be a donor?
People of all ages and medical histories should consider themselves potential donors. Your medical condition at the time of death will determine what organs and tissue can be donated.
Does my religion support organ, eye and tissue donation?
Every major religion in the United States supports organ, eye and tissue donation as one of the highest expressions of compassion and generosity.
Is there a cost to be an organ, eye and tissue donor?
There is no cost to the donor’s family or estate for donation. The donor family pays only for medical expenses before death and costs associated with funeral arrangements.
Does my social and/or financial status play any part in whether or not I will receive an organ if I ever need one?
No. When you are on the transplant waiting list for a donor organ, what really counts is the severity of your illness, body size, tissue type, blood type and other important medical information.
Why should I register to be an organ, eye and tissue donor?
Organ, eye and tissue transplants offer patients a new chance at healthy, productive, and normal lives and return them to their families, friends and communities. To find out how to be a donor in your state, visit www.donatelife.net Back to Top

PSF Celebrates OT Month in April
Occupational Therapy Helps People Live Life to Its Fullest
By Terri Cassidy
PSF Occupational Therapist
April isn’t just a chance to celebrate the coming of spring and Easter. It’s also Occupational Therapy Month.
Occupational therapy enables people of all ages live life to its fullest by helping them promote health and prevent or live better with injury, illness, or disability like traumatic brain injury and stroke.
“It’s a practice deeply rooted in science and is evidence-based, meaning that the plan designed for each patient is supported by data, experience, and ’best practices‘ that have been developed and proven over time,” said Troy Pontello OTR, Therapy Coordinator for Capron Rehab Unit.
Occupational therapy doesn’t just treat medical conditions, it helps people stay engaged in the activities that give them pleasure or a sense of purpose, despite challenges.
Occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants focus on “doing” whatever occupations or activities are meaningful to the person.
“It’s the occupational therapist’s job to get beyond problems to the solutions that assure each patient lives life to its fullest,” Pontello said.
Occupational therapists do this by helping people surmount their disabilities or medical conditions to do everyday things such getting dressed, calling to schedule an appointment, or preparing breakfast for their family. The nature of the therapy depends on the individual and their environment; occupational therapists consider the whole person when developing a therapy plan.
Starting in ICU, PSF OT’s engage their patients with simple activities of self care like brushing their teeth. Therapy continues through a patient’s stay in acute care, rehabilitation, and on to outpatient therapy once they return home.
“At each step of the way the individual’s abilities and personal goals are considered in creating the treatment plan,” said Melissa Chang, OTR, Occupational Therapist on Capron Rehab Unit. “Occupational therapy addresses one of the most important aspects of rehabilitation and recovery – the return to a normal life.”
During the week of April 5, an Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants display will be in the Penrose Hospital Cafeteria lobby and the week of April 11 at SFMC. Please stop by for more information on how OT’s make a difference in the lives of people with diverse medial issues. Back to Top

Laughter is the best medicine
The day finally arrived: Forrest Gump dies and goes to heaven. He is at the Pearly Gates, met by St. Peter himself. However, the gates are closed and Forrest approaches the Gatekeeper.
St. Peter says, “Well, Forrest, it’s certainly good to see you. We have heard a lot about you. I must inform you that the place is filling up fast, and we’ve been administering an entrance examination for everyone. The tests are short, but you have to pass them before you can get into Heaven.”
Forrest responds, “It shor is good to be here St. Peter, sir. But nobody ever tolt me about any entrance exam. Shor hope the test ain’t too hard; life was a big enough test as it was.”
St. Peter goes on, “Yes, I know, Forrest, but the test is only three questions.
Here are the questions:
1… What days of the week begin with the letter T?
2…. How many seconds are there in a year?
3… What is God’s first name?”
Forrest leaves to think the questions over. He returns the next day and sees St. Peter who waves him up and says, “Now that you have had a chance to think the questions over, tell me your answers.”
Forrest says, “Well, the first one – how many days in the week begin with the letter “T”? Shucks, that one’s easy. That’d be Today and Tomorrow.”
The Saint’s eyes open wide and he exclaims, “Forrest, that’s not what I was thinking, but… you do have a point, and I guess I didn’t specify, so I’ll give you credit for that answer. How about the next one?” asks St. Peter.
“How many seconds in a year? Now that one’s harder,” says Forrest, “but I thunk and thunk about that and I guess the only answer can be twelve.”
Astounded, St. Peter says, “Twelve? Twelve? Forrest, how in heaven’s name could you come up with twelve seconds in a year?”
Forrest says, “Shucks, there’s gotta be twelve: January 2nd, February 2nd, March 2nd…”
“Hold it,” interrupts St. Peter. “I see where you are going with this, and I see your point, though that wasn’t quite whit I had in mind, but I’ll have to give you credit for that one, too. Let’s go on with the next and final question. Can you tell me God’s first name?”
“Sure,” Forrest replied, “it’s Andy.”
“Andy?!” exclaimed an exasperated and frustrated St. Peter. “OK, I can understand how you came up with your answers to my first two questions, but just how in the world did you come up with the name of Andy as the first name of God?”
“Shucks, that was the easiest one of all,” Forrest replied. “I learned it from the song… ANDY WALKS WITH ME, ANDY TALKS WITH ME, ANDY TELLS ME I AM HIS OWN…”
St. Peter opened the Pearly Gates and said, “Run Forrest, run…” Back to Top
