Penrose-St Francis named one of the nation's best

Penrose-St. Francis Health Services has been named one of HealthGrades America’s 50 Best Hospitals, the only hospital in Colorado to receive the distinction.
This is the third year in a row Penrose has received this honor. The rating is based on health outcomes — to put it simply, you are less likely to die or face complications in these top hospitals.
“There’s the intention of being excellent, and then there’s the actual outcome,” Penrose president and CEO Margaret Sabin said. “It’s hard to argue with outcomes.”
She credited the hospital’s success to a medical staff that supports and challenges each other, the mutual respect between doctors and nurses, and investment in medical technology.
HealthGrades, an independent health care ratings organization, looks at 26 common procedures and diagnoses, crunching the data on how many patients die or face major complications.
The best 5 percent among the nation’s 5,000 nonfederal hospitals are then judged based on which institutions have been consistently good over a number of years. The top 1 percent of America’s hospitals are singled out for honors.
Sabin said it would be possible to game the system, by transferring the most risky cases to big hospitals in Denver. But she said Penrose is taking on more risk in recent years, by transferring fewer cases to Denver, taking on more tough cases from smaller hospitals in southern Colorado, and increasing the acuity of its case-mix.
“I’m so incredibly proud of this honor, but I also know it means you need to continue that culture of excellence,” Sabin said.
With that, she quickly transitioned from the good news to the areas she hopes to improve at Penrose, including the patient experience at the hospital, and providing wellness care to keep people from becoming patients.
Apparently, excellence doesn’t allow for complacency. Back to Top
