Danny

Meet Your Executives

This is a weekly column where you can meet your Penrose-St. Francis executives.

Chief Financial Officer Danny Reeves isn’t a fair weather New Orleans Saints fan. He has passionately followed the Saints for 25 years. Poke your head into his office and you can’t miss the flag on the wall, the Saints items on his shelf or the logo tie around his neck.

As a long-time fan, this year’s Super Bowl win is that much sweeter for him. “It took them 10 years to get to their first season of breaking even,” said Danny. “They didn't get their first winning season until their 20th season. They didn't win their first playoff game until their 33rd year in existence. After 43 years of futility, passion, anguish, celebration and every other emotion, this year has been exhilarating.”

Danny told his colleagues months ago that if the Saints go to the Super Bowl, he was going. He lived up to that promise. “To attend the Super Bowl in Miami and support my team is something I cannot describe or forget,” said Danny.

In addition to being a football fan, Danny is also in charge of PSF’s finances. “As CFO, I am responsible for all things financial which has a broad range,” said Danny.  “My day might be filled with anything from productivity, budgets, patient complaints, financial analysis, future strategic initiatives, regulatory compliance, contracting or capital.”

He didn’t just fall into the job of CFO. “My first career was with Domino's Pizza in the early to mid-80's where I ultimately was the Regional Director for seven pizza stores in New Jersey,” said Danny.

With an accounting degree from the University of New Orleans, he launched into his career in health care finance. Danny has held a variety of roles at PSF over the past decade:
• 1999 - 2002 – Controller
• 2005 – Assistant Vice-President of Finance
• Aug. 2008 – named Vice-President of Finance located at St. Francis Medical Center
• Three months later – named Interim Chief Financial Officer
• June 2009 – became the permanent Chief Financial Officer

When asked what he is going to do when he is not working, now that football season is over, he brought up his beloved Saints again. “It may take me a while to get over the euphoria of the Saints win in the Super Bowl,” said Danny. “Now that my wife, Pam, get's Sundays back, I am sure there will many things to do around the house.”

Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday

This Wednesday, February 17th is Ash Wednesday. It marks the beginning of the Lenten season, which lasts for approximately 40 days and culminates with Easter Sunday. Lent is a time of high drama.  The ritual of placing ashes on the forehead is designed to remind recipient of the temporary nature of life and the certainly of death (“remember you are dust and to dust you shall return”). The mood for Lent is one of seriousness—one that encourages deep thought and increased awareness - awareness of ourselves, both in solitude and in relationship. That explains the age-old Lenten emphasis on prayer and charitable giving to the poor.

We will be observing Lent here in the hospital in several ways. Below you will see the schedule for the distribution of ashes on Wednesday. Watch for our Lenten displays and reflect on the Lenten message featured on the display. We will be offering a short meditation on those words right here in the Pulse. We will also be introducing some spiritual thoughts from our fellow associates. Watch for spiritual words of wisdom from your co-workers in the Pulse and on the closed circuit TV. We hope that all of these things will offer you a bit of nourishment for your Lenten journey. And speaking of nourishment, be sure to help yourself to a hot cross bun Ash Wednesday morning in the cafeterias. Sharing a hot cross bun with someone during the season of Lent is supposed to ensure friendship throughout the coming year—“Half for you and half for me, between us two shall goodwill be.”  Blessings on all as we begin this Lenten season.

2020 Ice Cream Social

SFMC held their first 2020 messaging event on Friday, Feb. 5, in the cafeteria. 2020 Champions served ice cream while telling of the 2020 vision and enjoying good conversation with associates and volunteers. About 86 people came by for ice cream and to learn about 2020. Many were aware that there was a strategic plan, but were not sure what the plan entailed or how they fit into it.

A similar event is planned on Feb. 19 at 7 a.m. outside the coffee bar at SFMC... more details to come.

What Will You Do to Stop Diabetes? Know Your Risk.
Diabetes has become the greatest public health crisis of the next quarter century.  To address the burden of this disease, the American Diabetes Association is asking the American public – “What will you do to Stop Diabetes?  Know your risk.” On the 22nd annual American Diabetes Association Alert Day, March 23, 2010, the Association will encourage people to join the Stop Diabetes movement by taking the Diabetes Risk Test to find out if they are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes and if they are at high risk, to speak with their health care provider.

The Diabetes Risk Test requires users to answer simple questions about weight, age, family history and other potential risk factors for type 2 diabetes.  The Diabetes Risk Test will show users whether they are at low, moderate or high risk for pre-diabetes or diabetes.  If they are at high risk, they are encouraged to talk with their health care provider.

Join the movement to Stop Diabetes and get your free Diabetes Risk Test (English or Spanish), healthy lifestyle tips and more.Call 1-800-DIABETES (1-800-342-2383) or visit stopdiabetes.com.   Although Diabetes Alert Day is a one-day event, the Diabetes Risk Test is available all year long.
