Margaret's Column

Dear Associates,

I would like to thank each of you for your dedication to Penrose-St. Francis Health Services. I firmly believe in investing in your health. As you all know, part of Centura’s 2020 Vision is to “Move Upstream.” PSF strongly believes in this goal and we intend to help you take time to care for YOU.  PSF is working directly with our neighbors on the “Healthy Neighborhood Project” to “Move Upstream” but most importantly, we need to care for our most important assets…YOU.  During tough economic times such as these, we know that our health is even more important. If you feel good and are healthy, then you will provide excellent patient care, be more productive at work, take better care of your families, and have energy to enjoy your life.

I would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to participate in the upcoming 2010 Club HIIP Health Screening, “Healthy Hoedown.” PSF is one of the only companies in Colorado to have been awarded the “Fit Friendly” Platinum award again for the third year in a row from the American Heart Association and we need to live up to this honor. We are fortunate to have a wellness program and I want you to take advantage of these free screenings to assess, understand, and know your health numbers so that you can strive to improve your overall health. As healthcare providers, it is our duty to be role models to the community and to take care of our minds, bodies, and spirits.

Come celebrate Heart Month and join me, along with my Administrative Team, in attending the “Healthy Hoedown” with Club HIIP!!! I am asking all management to take this opportunity to encourage their associates to participate in this event. The health screenings will include: blood pressures, body mass index, carpal tunnel evaluations, osteoporosis heel scan, pulmonary function, cholesterol/ HDL/glucose lab work, hearing, vision, and relaxing neck/back massages. Information will be available about smoking cessation and cancer prevention. There will be food, prizes, and contests!

Gary

Meet Your Executives

This is the first in a weekly column where you can meet your Penrose-St. Francis executives.

Diverse and interesting, that’s how Gary Morse, vice president of Human Resources, sees his job and his life. When asked what he does when he isn’t working, he said, “I just released a 9-song CD of fishing songs called Casting From the Shore, so being an independent record producer and performer has been dominating my free time.”

It appears he and Barbara have raised two children who continue that family musical tradition. Their son Devon, 24, has a little jazz-rock band in Ft. Collins and, according to Gary, his daughter Kellyn, 28, is a wonderful singer. Even his dog Marley, a dreadlocked standard poodle, digs reggae.

His career has also been diverse and interesting. “I started with PSF in 1986, as the Director of Chemical Dependency Treatment Services,” said Gary. “Two years later, I became the co-Director of the Department of Behavioral Medicine, and in 1990, I assumed the Directorship of Capron Rehab.  In 1993, I left the system to work in Long Term Care. I wrote a couple of books during that time and did some national training and consulting.  I returned to PSF in 2000 as Director of Rehab Services, and then assumed the VP of Human Resources job in June of 2007.”

“The spirit of the organization and its people is what makes me excited to come to work every day,” said Gary. “What we do makes a huge difference in this community, and although it is sobering at times, the miracles charge me up. It’s wonderful to work in an environment where love is palpable.”

CSFD Recognizes Keathe Hanley

You are being recognized for going above and beyond in assisting members of our department. You have been a true advocate on our behalf and you have worked diligently with the Medical Division to provide a mechanism of immediate feedback on patients suffering from an accute heart attack. The result of this partnership has resulted in a much higher level of care for patients. Thank you for all you have done to care for the citizens of our community.

Peanut Butter

WHAT'S NUT TO LOVE?!

WHAT’S NUT TO LOVE?!
By Lindsey Tucker, Penrose-St. Francis Dietetic Intern

It’s a childhood favorite, a classic comfort food, and a satisfying staple found in almost every American household—peanut butter.  You may prefer yours with jelly, bananas, or honey on your favorite bread or maybe paired with celery sticks and apple slices.  Some of us are even guilty of eating PB straight from the jar!  After years of enjoying this tasty “stick to your ribs” source of protein, you might have noticed our grocery shelves are no longer limited to Jif® and Skippy®.  Peanut butter manufacturers have jumped on the newfound nut butter bandwagon and are now producing endless variations of this classic favorite, as well as introducing spreads made from many other nuts and seeds.  This leaves you, the consumer, an opportunity to choose from a wide variety of nutrient-dense nut butters.

Is There a Better Butter?
While each nut carries a unique flavor that distinguishes one variety from another, all are excellent sources of protein, fiber, and fat.  Nuts primarily contain poly- and mono-unsaturated or “heart healthy” fats and are naturally cholesterol and trans-fat free!  In fact, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) states that in conjunction with a diet low in saturated or “unhealthy” fat and cholesterol, “eating 1.5 ounces per day of most nuts…may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.”  The FDA deems peanuts, almonds, hazelnuts, pistachios, walnuts, and pecans among those that generate the greatest heart benefits.  Cashew, macadamia, Brazil, and pine nuts, are not as honorable due to their higher content of saturated fat.

In addition to promoting heart health, most nuts are a good source of the minerals magnesium and copper, along with many of the B Vitamins and Vitamin E.  The latter serves as an antioxidant, fighting off free radicals and the effects of oxidative stress—both of which can contribute to heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and other health problems.

Back to the question: Is there a better butter?  When nuts are processed and formed into natural butters, they retain almost all of the positive nutritional properties outlined above.  However, reading labels is essential to ensure you and your family are consuming nut butters in their least processed form, commonly only consisting of the nut and some added salt.  For the highest quality product look for “natural” butters with no added flavor, oil, or sugar.  For the sodium conscious, “salt free” nut butters are also available in select stores.   Each variety of nut contains different levels of vitamins and minerals; hence, varying your nut and nut butter choices will lead to a well-balanced intake of nutrients. Remember, nut butters derived from the six nuts recommended by the FDA will always be the most “heart healthy” options.

Spread the Word!
We are not advising you ditch your family favorite!  Peanut butter remains an excellent nutrient-packed meal or snack option.  We are only encouraging you to explore the nut butters offered at your local grocery store and consider experimenting with a different variety.  Who knows, your new favorite sandwich could become an almond butter and jelly or a pecan butter and banana!

News Briefs

Calling all associates who go “above and beyond” everyday!

Do you do your best every day to go “above and beyond” for your patients and for each other?  Do you want to be a part of something fun and exciting that only happens once a year? If the answer is yes, then we have a great opportunity for you that won’t take up much of your time.

We are searching for cost center volunteers for our 2010 Associate Campaign. The Penrose-St. Francis Associate Campaign has helped so many people over the years, and being a volunteer allows you to be more involved in making this endeavor a success.  You do not have to personally ask for money, and you get to come to the kick-off breakfast at the Garden of the Gods Club which is always fun!! Will you help us by being a volunteer for your cost center?

We have an extraordinary team of volunteers for most cost centers, but there are some that do not have coverage.  We would like EVERY cost center to have someone involved with this year’s Associate Campaign, ideally one volunteer to 10 associates.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer for the upcoming 2010 Associate Campaign, please call Melinda at the Penrose-St. Francis Health Foundation at 776-7760.

What Will You Do to Stop Diabetes? Know Your Risk.
Diabetes has become the greatest public health crisis of the next quarter century.  To address the burden of this disease, the American Diabetes Association is asking the American public – “What will you do to Stop Diabetes?  Know your risk.” On the 22nd annual American Diabetes Association Alert Day, March 23, 2010, the Association will encourage people to join the Stop Diabetes movement by taking the Diabetes Risk Test to find out if they are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes and if they are at high risk, to speak with their health care provider.

The Diabetes Risk Test requires users to answer simple questions about weight, age, family history and other potential risk factors for type 2 diabetes.  The Diabetes Risk Test will show users whether they are at low, moderate or high risk for pre-diabetes or diabetes.  If they are at high risk, they are encouraged to talk with their health care provider.

Join the movement to Stop Diabetes and get your free Diabetes Risk Test (English or Spanish), healthy lifestyle tips and more.Call 1-800-DIABETES (1-800-342-2383) or visit stopdiabetes.com.   Although Diabetes Alert Day is a one-day event, the Diabetes Risk Test is available all year long.

Penrose-St. Francis Health Services
Julie Penrose Auditorium
February 24th-25th, 2010

Nurses spend more time with patients who are facing the end of life than any other member of the health care team.  Yet, studies have shown that many nurses feel inadequately prepared to provide the comprehensive care so important at the end of life.  Expert nursing care has the potential to greatly reduce the burden and distress of those facing life’s end and the ability to offer support for the many physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs of patients and their families.
