Associate Partnership Pulse Survey

Please participate in the very short survey & share your opinion!

If you haven't done so already, you are invited to take a few minutes to provide feedback on some important questions. A link was sent to your email last week and a reminder will be sent today. Information on how to take the survey can be found in the flyer further down your screen. Centura Health leaders throughout the state take your opinions very seriously and will continue to work hard to build an organization that extends Christ’s healing ministry to the people in our community, and respects its associates by creating a work environment of which we can all be proud.

HealthGrades Award

Penrose-St. Francis Health Services Ranked Top 5 Percent in Nation
According to Quality Study
Recognized for Outstanding Clinical Performance by HealthGrades, the Leading Independent Healthcare Ratings Organization

Penrose-St. Francis Health Services announced on Jan. 26 that a new study ranks its clinical quality among the top 5 percent in the nation. This is the seventh year in a row that Penrose-St. Francis Health Services has received the distinction, and the only hospital in Colorado to have done so.

The study by HealthGrades, the leading independent healthcare ratings organization, analyzed patient outcomes at each of the nation’s 5,000 nonfederal hospitals over the years 2006, 2007 and 2008 and named hospitals in the top 5 percent as HealthGrades Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence™.

“We are committed to providing the highest quality health care for our community,” said Margaret Sabin, President and CEO, Penrose-St. Francis Health Services. “This award demonstrates the consistent quality of care that our physicians and associates provide every day to the Pikes Peak region.”

Penrose-St. Francis was also recognized as one of “America’s 50 Best Hospitals” for 2008 and 2009 by HealthGrades.

The Healthy Neighborhood Project

The Healthy Neighborhood Project is a collaborative effort by the Old North End Neighborhood (ONEN), Penrose-St. Francis Health Services and wellCenters to nurture and improve the health of our community, one neighborhood at a time. The project is designed to help ONEN residents learn about, improve upon and track their health status.

More than 250 of our ONEN neighbors took part in the free health screening.

The project, which is open only to ONEN residents 18 years old and older, includes:
• A pre- and post-project online health risk assessment
• A pre- and post-project health screening including body mass index, blood pressure, total cholesterol, non-fasting HDL & glucose
• Wellness Fun Fair featuring additional screenings, wellness information and  activities for kids
• One-on-one wellness coaching and self-directed care
• Access to free and low-cost wellness classes and events

The unique feature of this program is that Penrose-St. Francis will be able to measure the effectiveness that wellness and prevention programs have on participant’s health using proven scientific tools for collecting and analyzing data.

Star Associate logo

Star Associates

The Rewards & Recognition committee chose to spotlight the Centura Pillar of Cost for the Fall Quarter 2009. The following associates have been recognized by their peers because they demonstrate consistent behavior of Stewardship by “presenting examples in which careful use of materials, time, or financial resources are shown”.

PH Star Associate: Jane Dodder, Patient Safety/Risk Management
Nominated by: Sue Sindler & Donna Park

Jane exemplifies stewardship of financial resources throughout the year by the dedication and hard work she expends on the annual Risk Management Incentive Plan. This plan is driven by Catholic Health Initiatives which includes the participation of many CHI hospitals. Participation in this program requires developing 6 initiatives each year directed at improving patient safety throughout the PSF system. The successful completion of these initiatives involves the efforts of many other managers and associates. However, none of these initiatives would come together and demonstrate our improvements if not for Jane’s outstanding leadership throughout the entire process. By participating and obtaining consistently high scores on these incentive plans year after year, we are able to realize a significant rebate on our insurance premiums in the range of approximately $300,000 dollars these last two fiscal years. In addition, Jane has been instrumental this year in leading several of Centura’s other CHI hospital risk managers with developing their incentive plans as well.

St. Francis Medical Center Star Associate: Nancy Marts, Mother/Baby Unit
Nominated by: Pat Tetterton

Nancy shows outstanding stewardship for our organization daily. She has completed numerous recoveries of monies that would have been lost through incomplete documentation of “Stop-Time IV”. She not only corrects the documentation timely but also holds the nurse accountable by sitting with each one of them and assisting them with the correct documentation. She teaches them the importance of this. Within the past 4 months, she has recovered approximately $3500 in recapturing charges for the unit. Nancy also exemplifies stewardship with correcting and putting in circumcision charges that have been missed, charged on the wrong infant, or double charged.

She has risen to the task of assisting Pat with maintaining their productivity. Nancy steps in and takes charge on the unit, works daily with the new staff, teaches the discharge class when a charge nurse is tied up, works in the trans/newborn nursery, assists with counseling and education associates about overtime, and helps problem-solve daily the productivity issues that occur on the unit. She is here for the staff, helping at all times.

Nancy has also changed the process with the discharging of the Hugs & Kisses sensors by educating staff not to put them in their pockets where they can be taken home. The unit had lost 4 sets at $515.00 each. Since Nancy’s training, none have been lost in the past 6 months. She is careful with the units’ utilization of supplies and educates staff on avoidance of waste. These are a few examples of Nancy’s “Outstanding Stewardship”.

St. Francis Health Center Star Associate: Margaret Morris, Behavioral Health
Nominated by: Kay McCarthy

Maggie has been with PSF since the 1980’s serving what then was the Partial Hospitalization Program working with a very difficult patient population. She later worked as a Mental Health Worker on the Inpatient Unit, and in the last decade or so as a Case Manager on this unit. Wherever Maggie has worked, she has brought her imagination, whether it is dealing with the most challenging patients, family members, or insurance companies. She makes sure we get the money in the door.

Maggie is extremely creative in managing both the inpatient stay as well as any resources provided to the client or family. She wants the discharge plan to work for the patient and family in regards to what they need, and also that they can sustain the plan financially. She is a bargain hound when it comes to thinking of safe, imaginative ways that we can get our patients transported home or to their next facility.

She is very thorough, efficient, and is the lead on resources for the discharging patients. Her passion, compassion, and love for the patients with their emotional and physical needs is never ending. Maggie has worked tirelessly to advocate for those with greater needs, holding many in the community accountable for what needs to be provided for the less fortunate.

Also nominated by: Charlene Coffin

Maggie is a seasoned pro when managing our system’s and our patients’ resources wisely. She consistently “thinks outside the box” as she carefully and creatively evaluates how to maximize the patients’ benefits and resources while ensuring that the patient’s receive the best possible quality of care and value. Maggie has a broad and deep knowledge of community resources, both locally and across Colorado, which she freely shares with teammates, other behavioral health staff, and other facilities within the state. Maggie’s “mission” is to facilitate the patients’ best “bang for the buck” in a timely, user-friendly manner.

Off-Campus Star Associate: Karen Dailey, Profile EAP
Nominated by: Michelle Powers

Martha Stewart may know how to throw the perfect party, but Karen should be know as “Martha Stewardship” because she is as meticulous about resources as Martha is about decorating. Karen’s attention to the use of our resources is as personal as if she were running her own home. She has often made fabulous food for our luncheons because it was more cost effective than catering. The recycling center is a last resort for Karen. She can see the plethora of possibilities in an item. A plastic ice cream tub may now be used as Tupperware for other foods or perhaps it could hold crayons for the children in the waiting room. The box your copy paper came in could be used to store and organize a closet. That fruit basket you received over the holidays would be perfect for serving bread at the next luncheon. And that old coffee mug would make a cute pencil holder! Only when an item has given its all will Karen finally allow it to rest in peace at the recycling center. Karen also does not like to waste time. She is respectful of others’ time and prefers to figure out the most efficient way of accomplishing a task. When ordering our supplies, she often researches our options to make sure we are getting the best price and quality for our money. Yes, Karen should have her own show. We could all learn a lot about being penny-wise from her.

Associate Campaign Logo

2010 Associate Campaign Volunteers Needed

Calling all associates who go “above and beyond” everyday!

Do you do your best every day to go “above and beyond” for your patients and for each other?  Do you want to be a part of something fun and exciting that only happens once a year? If the answer is yes, then we have a great opportunity for you that won’t take up much of your time.

We are searching for cost center volunteers for our 2010 Associate Campaign. The Penrose-St. Francis Associate Campaign has helped so many people over the years, and being a volunteer allows you to be more involved in making this endeavor a success.  You do not have to personally ask for money, and you get to come to the kick-off breakfast at the Garden of the Gods Club which is always fun!! Will you help us by being a volunteer for your cost center?

We have an extraordinary team of volunteers for most cost centers, but there are some that do not have coverage.  We would like EVERY cost center to have someone involved with this year’s Associate Campaign, ideally 1 volunteer to 10 associates.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer for the upcoming 2010 Associate Campaign, please call Melinda at the Penrose-St. Francis Health Foundation at 776-7760.

Facebook

Three and a half months ago, PSF launched a facebook page where fans can learn about our services, be the first to know about events, health news, view photos and leave comments. To date we are the Centura facility with the most fans – 590!  Below are a few comments we have received from our fans:

• I love Penrose-St. Francis, saved my life two years ago.

• You guys rock, you take such good care of my daughter!

• You have taken great care of both my wife and I. You’re the best around for a thousand miles!

• We had two kids at PCH and one at SFMC. We also had two kids end up in the hospital two years ago at PCH's Peds dept., one PCH ER visit and one D&C at PCH. Our experiences with the hospital staff and the environment set up at both facilities were wonderful. As a result, when we review options for medical plans each year, we always check to make sure that the St. Francis facilities are on our plan. While we hope we don’t need to use hospital services in the future, we know where we will go if the need arises again.

• WTG PSF!!!! Please keep up the great work!!!! I wish that my medical insurance would let me go to you!!! I hate the other city or county owned hospital. Your hospitality is the best!!!!!!!!

• Amazing hospital! Took very good care of my father before he passed away, they showed nothing but compassion towards my father and family, Thank you so much.

• SFMC rocks!!

• I love that hosp! My stay there was amazing - it’s a beautiful building with wonderful employees.

• Been told many things while I was a patient at Penrose and all good. I felt so much more at ease at Penrose than my own hospital.

• Took an ER trip here this afternoon. The doctor and nurses who treated me were very nice and funny. Thanks for what you do.

• I know from recent personal experience that the Penrose Rehab team is wonderful.

• I need to get a photo up, but just wanted to say.. I had an amazing birth experience 09-08-09. Brooke in L&D Rocks! (she was my nurse) Thanks for such a great experience!

ELNEC-Core Training Program
(End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium)
Penrose-St. Francis Health Services
Julie Penrose Auditorium
February 24th-25th, 2010

Nurses spend more time with patients who are facing the end of life than any other member of the health care team.  Yet, studies have shown that many nurses feel inadequately prepared to provide the comprehensive care so important at the end of life.  Expert nursing care has the potential to greatly reduce the burden and distress of those facing life’s end and the ability to offer support for the many physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs of patients and their families.
For more information, please contact Ginny Vravick, Palliative Care CNS, 719-776-5646, VIRGINIAVRAVICK@CENTURA.ORG

Pressure Ulcer Prevention Class - Date change to March 11

NO ONE DIES ALONE
Through the efforts of volunteers, No One Dies Alone provides a reassuring presence to dying patients who would otherwise be alone. This program is for patients who are expected to die within 48-72 hours and have no friends or family locally or who have no family involved or present.
Each patient is assessed to determine if they meet referral criteria for the program and then a vigil is activated by contacting the No One Dies Alone Vigil Coordinator. The coordinator then creates a schedule of coverage for the patient, attempting to provide a companion for as many hours as possible.

Patient Identification
If you identify a patient who may die alone, please communicate with the Charge Nurse and have them page the No One Dies Alone vigil coordinator. Patients at Penrose Hospital can be served at any time by the volunteer team that has already been established.  We will begin serving patients at St. Francis Medical Center on March 1, 2010 after the orientation session has been completed.
For more information or to volunteer, please contact Ginny Vravick, Palliative Care CNS, 719-776-5646, VIRGINIAVRAVICK@CENTURA.ORG, or Theresa Gregoire, Chaplain, 719-776-2682, THERESAGREGOIRE@CENTURA.ORG.
