Beth Zautke, Volunteer Director
**************************************************************************************************************************
You are cordially invited to attend a Retirement Reception Honoring
Beth Zautke
Thursday, January 28, 2010
2:00 - 4:00 PM
Cancer Center Conference Rooms A, B, C
Penrose Hospital
__________________________________________________________________________________
After 32 years of service to Penrose-St. Francis Health Services, Beth Zautke will retire on January 29. Beth began her career at PSF in April, 1978 as a medical technologist in the Chemistry Lab at Penrose Hospital. In June of 1979, she transferred to Penrose Community Hospital and worked in the general laboratory for nearly seven yearsbefore transferring back to Penrose Blood Bank and working in Transfusion Service.
In March, 1994, Beth was named manager of the Penrose-St. Francis Healthcare System Blood Bank, Transfusion Service and Donor Service. Beth served as manager of that department for seven and a half years before being named Director of Volunteer Services and Information Desk Services in July, 2002.
Beth earned her B.S. in Medical Technology from Bradley University in Peoria, IL and her M.A. in Communication at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. While in Illinois, she workedat St. Joseph Hospital in Chicago in Microbiology for one year before moving to Denver in 1967. In Denver, Beth worked at the University of Colorado Medical Center in Pediatric Chemistry,Microchemistry, and Microbiology until 1971 when she married William Zautke, a clinical social worker, who recently retired from private practice. Beth and Bill moved back to Wisconsin for four years; while in Wisconsin Beth worked as a supervisor in the Microbiology Department of Theda Clark Hospital.
Beth and Bill were blessed with two sons, Luke and Nathan, who now live in the Denver area. Over the years, Beth has been involved with various committees for Steele Elementary School, the Pioneer Museum, Pikes Peak Hospice, the West Region of the Cancer Information Service, First Lutheran Church and the North End Homeowner's Association. Beth has also been an officer and active member of the Colorado Health Directors of Volunteer Services.
Currently, Beth is a volunteer for "No One Dies Alone" at Penrose Hospital and is looking forward to other volunteer involvement upon her retirement. She enjoys hiking, gourmet cooking, the symphony, and travel. Friends and family are an integral part of Beth's full and active life. Beth's leadership in Volunteer Services will be greatly missed. Her objectivity, fairness and quiet steadiness have seen the team of volunteers nearly double in number during the last seven years. She is extremely people-oriented, sensitive to the needs of others, compassionate, caring and knowledgeable. She encourages creativity and her stewardship with overseeing the Gift Shops has resulted in very substantialfinancial contributions on behalf of the PSF Volunteer Association to the PSF Foundation and our hospitals.

No One Dies Alone
Ask anyone what he or she most fears about dying and the universal response is usually dying in pain and dying alone. We all wish for a painless death in the presence of someone who cares.
But what happens to the person who has outlived his family and friends, or the lone traveler who comes to Penrose-St. Francis after an accident? What of the individual who comes here from a place such as the Rescue Mission, who—by choice or circumstances—has lived life away from family and mainstream society?
Mother Teresa said, “No one should die alone. Each human should die with the sight of a loving face.”
We can provide companionship to patients in the dying process who are truly alone, and in so doing, provide the gift of respect and dignity to another human being at the end of life.
Through the efforts of volunteers, No One Dies Alone provides a reassuring presence to dying patients who would otherwise be alone. This program is for patients who are expected to die within 48-72 hours and have no friends or family locally or who have no family involved or present.
Each patient is assessed to determine if they meet referral criteria for the program and then a vigil is activated by contacting the No One Dies Alone Vigil Coordinator. The coordinator then creates a schedule of coverage for the patient, attempting to provide a companion for as many hours as possible.
Volunteer criteria
Only current Penrose-St. Francis employees and active volunteers with at least three months of service can serve as “compassionate companions.”
Volunteers will attend a one-time orientation session. Topics include the referral process and criteria, palliative and comfort care, the role and appropriate activities, employee volunteer policy and standard precautions, confidentiality, patient rights and ethics.
Volunteer Process
• Volunteers will call before coming to the hospital to ensure that the patient is still there and no family is present.
• Upon arrival on nursing unit, they will introduce themselves to staff and proceed to patient’s room.
• Volunteers will not perform or assist in any usual and customary patient care done by medical personnel, but may help in any way the staff requests, as long as the task is something the volunteer is comfortable with, has been trained to do, and it doesn’t endanger their physical or emotional well-being.
• During the vigil, they will act as a friend to the patient…..they may read to them, converse with them, play music for them……whatever is within the patient’s wishes.
• They will observe the patient for signs of discomfort and report this or any change in condition to staff.
• If family arrives, they will exit quietly and gracefully, and let vigil coordinator and nursing staff know of this development.
• The volunteer will notify staff when they leave, and if known, when to expect another companion to arrive.
Program Development
This program was fashioned after the original program at Sacred Heart Medical Center and started at Penrose Hospital in July of 2009, where we have had four patient vigils to-date. We will now be starting the program at St. Francis Medical Center, with our first orientation program on February 23rd from 5:30-8:30pm.
Patient Identification
If you identify a patient who may die alone, please communicate with the Charge Nurse and have them page the No One Dies Alone vigil coordinator. Patients at Penrose Hospital can be served at any time by the volunteer team that has already been established. We will begin serving patients at St. Francis Medical Center on March 1, 2010 after the orientation session has been completed.
For more information or to volunteer, please contact Ginny Vravick, Palliative Care CNS, 719-776-5646, VIRGINIAVRAVICK@CENTURA.ORG, or Theresa Gregoire, Chaplain, 719-776-2682, THERESAGREGOIRE@CENTURA.ORG. Back to Top

Donate your old cell phone to TESSA
Did you get a new cell phone for Christmas and are wondering what to do with the old one? The Outreach Committee would be happy to accept your donation to give to T.E.S.S.A. Your discarded phone helps those women and men who are dealing with domestic violence or sexual abuse. Since 2004, Penrose-St. Francis has collected 788 cell phones providing many people peace of mind.
Be confident that T.E.S.S.A will erase all of your personal information from your phone if you don’t. Please help save a life! Bring your old cell phone to the information desks at Penrose Main or St. Francis Medical Center or to the registration desk at St. Francis Health Center. At the ASC, you can leave them at the front desk. Please put the phone together with the charger in a plastic bag. Thanks for making a difference! Back to Top
