Margaret's Christmas Message

I have wonderful news:
The Hoped-For-One,
the Birthing you have longed for
in the depths of your soul,
has come, oh YES, has come!
In the prose of Joyce Rupp, The God-Child, Christ, has arrived.
I’ve had the pleasure of serving and leading you for just over a year. Amid the challenges we face – and hard work of being in health care – the one constant of this past year has been your remarkable abilities to make hope and empathy a concrete part of your work and ministry. You do so not only to our guests but to each other, and in remarkable and unanticipated ways. I stand in deep awe and respect for you.
In the beautiful hymns of this holy season, and in the great masterpiece paintings of the Nativity, angels are those quiet, but ever present, figures of joy and companionship. Two thousand years later, our 21st century world longs for those same ever-present messengers from the Heavens. For me, you are those angels, those powerful witnesses to our Mission of healing and caring for others.
And so I thank you for who you are, and for the inspiration you are to our entire team.
May the love and compassion that you so generously give to others, be returned to you a hundred fold. With love and deep appreciation for each of you, I wish you every possible Christmas blessing.

Department Spotlight
The department spotlight for December shines on the Renal Diabetic/Med-Surg Unit.
located on the 5th Floor at PH.

The Renal Diabetic/Med-Surg Unit is a 30-bed unit that provides specialized care for the renal diabetic patient. The unit has 48 associates who work diligently to make their patient's stay as pleasant as possible. The unit has at least 26 of their beds filled year round and is proud to be the floor with the highest physician satisfaction rate.
What the Rewards & Recognition committee noticed immediately about the unit was its progressive attitude. This is a unit that is not willing to accept things as status quo. They are continually looking to discover new and more efficient ways of doing things. Melissa Williamson, clinical manager; Mackenzie Mudd, clinical coordinator; and Laurie Kennedy, director of learning and leadership development with the support of Rose Ann Moore, patient care director, are taking up the challenge to find ways to improve their stats and make this unit even more cohesive. In November, they volunteered to try a new program called “Melissa in Motion” which looks at issues such as patient satisfaction, associate satisfaction, fall ratios, and decreasing urinary tract infections.
"This is a team that really enjoys working together,” said Melissa Williamson, clinical manager. “If someone on the unit needs time off, the other associates come together to cover their shift." The unit also incorporates other teambuilding and supportive projects for its associates. Lori Bird, RN and Linda Mueller, RN have started a great newsletter which updates the team on important information, celebrates the unit’s achievements and shares those must have items like an Italian stuffed-mushroom recipe that is perfect for the holidays. The unit started a Superhero and Star-of-the-Month award to recognize members of the team who go above and beyond the call of duty. Most recently, they sponsored a class on renal education that brought together community nurses for all day training. It was so successful that they are looking to host another class in the future. To incorporate fun, they hold an annual Christmas party and summer barbecue.
This is a group who truly recognizes that teamwork, appreciation of co-workers, and progressive thinking creates an atmosphere where people want to work.
Congratulations to the Renal Diabetic/Med-Surg Unit for being the Department in the Spotlight! Back to Top

Giving Tobacco the Boot!
By Erin Heberlein & Kristine Barrett, HIIP
In celebration of being a Tobacco Free organization for over one year, and in observance of the Great American Smokeout in November 2009, Club HIIP recognized individuals who have made a significant health improvement in their lives by giving tobacco the boot for good.
The celebration luncheon congratulated those who have quit smoking, whether it has been for one month or 38 years. A clock award was presented to each individual to remind them of the time added to their life due to quitting smoking as well as extra time they have to do the things they love in life.

Luncheon attendees crowd around the clock award which serves as a reminder of the time they have added to their life.
Quitting smoking for any period of time is a challenging and a life changing task. PSF considers all of those who attended and shared how they quit to be courageous individuals who deeply contribute to the success of our organization.
Smoking is an expensive habit. Besides the fact that a pack of cigarettes costs a smoker almost $5/pack today, there are other incurred costs related to smoking such as increased costs for dry cleaning, breath mints, and depreciation of resale value of cars and homes. According to the CDC, the average smoker spends an extra $1623 per year on healthcare and an employer pays an extra $1760 per year on lost productivity!
The overwhelming and powerful success stories and information shared by those who attended has allowed us to quantify the amount of money they and PSF have saved on cigarettes and healthcare, as well as a number that no price can be put on—quality years added to their lives!
Attendees were asked to share the following information:
-How many years they smoked
-How much they smoked per day
-How long they have been smoke free
From the above information from 23 individuals, HIIP was able to calculate the following data for this group of PSF past smokers:
Money Spent:
-Total years smoked = 471 years (Average of 23 years per smoker)
-Total cigarette cost = $437,716 (Average cost of $19,031 per smoker)
-Total healthcare cost = $764,433 (Extra healthcare cost is $1623 per smoker)
-Total employer cost lost on productivity = $828,960 (Productivity lost by employers is $1760 per smoker)
-Total costs for 23 individuals due to smoking = $2,031,109
Money Saved:
On the contrast, these individuals have now been smoke free an average of 10 years!
-Total saved on cigarette costs = $372,134 (Average savings of 16180 per smoker)
-Total saved on extra health care costs = $509,182 (Average savings of $22,138 per smoker) Total money saved by quitting and increased productivity = $1,710,276
Not only are these people richer, but they are happier, healthier and more productive associates for our organization, and better moms, dads, friends and community members! This is a case where quitters really do win!
Additionally, HIIP celebrated the Great American Smokeout, by kicking butts. Associates on the SFMC and PH campuses participated by picking up cigarette butts for just one hour, and you won’t believe your eyes with what they retrieved.

The image of cigarettes shown above represents three quarters of a pound picked up around PH. There were actually 6.75 pounds of cigarettes picked up just around the PH campus! Thank you to all who participated to make our campus environments more beautiful!
If you know of someone who has quit smoking please congratulate them on their monumental achievement and have them contact ErinHeberlein@centura.org so that they may be formally recognized, and can share their success in order inspire and motivate others. Back to Top
