For Your Spirit

Advent began Sunday, November 29 and during this season of waiting, the Spiritual Care Department will offer Tuesdays in Advent.  At noon each Tuesday during Advent, there will be a service in the Chapel at Penrose Main for a journey of spiritual renewal.  Each service will offer reflection, prayer and sacred music. HealthGrades Award

Congratulations!

Congratulations to the Pulmonary Care and Critical Care teams at PSF.  Last week, they were presented the HealthGrades 2010 Pulmonary Care and Critical Care Excellence Awards. A study by HealthGrades, the leading independent healthcare ratings organization, found that Penrose-St. Francis Health Services is ranked number one in Colorado for overall critical care services for the third consecutive year. In addition, PSF is among the top 5 percent in the nation for pulmonary, GI medical treatment and critical care. The nation's nearly 5,000 nonfederal hospitals were all included in the sweeping study, which examined mortality rates and complication rates from government data from 2006, 2007 and 2008.

Congratulations!

Margaret Sabin, Pres. & CEO; Faith Young, RN, CCU clinical manager at SFMC; Jennifer Robertson, RN, CCU clinical manager at PH and Nate Olson, CEO, SFMC

Barry Nolan

New Name for PH Board Room

PSF and its Foundation held a reception on December 7 to dedicate and name the board room at Penrose Hospital.  It is now known as the Barry Nolan Board Room in honor and memory of a man who made lasting contributions to the mission of Penrose-St. Francis through his outstanding leadership and dedicated service (photo left).

Nolan served nine years on the Penrose-St. Francis Health Foundation Board (2000-2009), and four years on the Catholic Health Initiatives Colorado Board (2006-2009).  He was also Chairman of both, and in this capacity was an ex-officio member of the Penrose-St. Francis Health Services board.

Jerry Bagg, now President of the national CHI Foundation, worked closely with Barry on these boards for many years and gave remarks at the reception.  He remembers Barry as “a man of quiet strength, high intelligence, sincere caring and deep perception.”  Diane LeBlanc, President of Penrose-St. Francis Health Foundation, also worked with Barry.  “We were fortunate to have his wisdom, guidance and vision.  It is with great respect and gratitude that this board room is named the Barry Nolan Board Room in his honor and memory.”

Nolan was a well-known advertising and marketing executive in Colorado Springs with greeting-card giant Current, Inc.  He held a Bachelor’s degree from Princeton and an MBA from Columbia University.

Diane LeBlanc, PSF Foundation President/CDO poses with members of the Nolan family.

Craft Fair

Craft Fair

On Friday, December 4, SFMC associates and volunteers held their Annual Christmas Craft Fair to benefit a local non-profit group. This year associates selected the Prayer Shawl Ministry to receive the monies raised from the fair. The Prayer Shawl Ministry began in January 2009 and is made up of volunteers who prayerfully create prayer shawls, lap robes and other crocheted items as a reminder of God’s love and care for patients and families in the hospital.

The Christmas Craft Fair raised over $1800 which will help purchase yarn and other supplies to make crocheted items. Members of the Prayer Shawl Ministry thank you for your support!

Kathleen Woodard and Lisa Dykes show off items for sale at the craft fair.

Decisions, decisions.  SFMC associates view the many crafts available at the fair.
