Wings of Honor

Flight For Life Colorado paid tribute to its “Wings of Honor” recipients during a ceremony today at the Flight For Life helipad, St. Francis Medical Center.

Wings of Honor is an annual award given to people who have acted heroically and selfless in order to safe another person in situations of severe distress, or even facing death.

“We feel it’s important to seek out these amazing stories each year and take the time to say ‘thank you’ to those who put others’ lives in their own hands,” said Kristina Reavis, a flight nurse with Flight For Life Colorado.  “It’s a celebration of the incredible kindness of strangers and the greatness of the human nature that calls us to reach out in difficult and often dangerous situations.”

Flight For Life is the nation’s first, and still one of the finest, air medical transport programs. Flight For Life is a community service operating out of Denver, Frisco, Pueblo and Colorado Springs, and provides critical care transport for a nine-state region with four helicopters, two fixed-wing airplanes and three ground ambulances.

Margaret Sabin, PSF president & CEO, welcomed the crowd and commended the heroes for their actions.  She also talked about Centura's 2020 initiative, which includes gathering and analyzing trauma information across Centura for opportunities to improve trauma care and to implement best practices.

This year’s award recipients included:

Sergeant Tony Schiefelbein and Deputy Bonner Cordova, Elbert County Sheriff’s Office, delivered a baby at a residence when a pregnant woman couldn’t make it to the hospital.  When they realized the baby wasn’t breathing, they used a turkey baster to clear the infant’s airway and performed CPR, saving the girl’s life.

Steven Horton and Chelsi Brown, two 17-year-old hikers, responded to a paraglider on Mt. Herman after he crashed and was unresponsive and pulseless.  They performed CPR, called 911 and stayed with the man until EMS could reach him.  Unfortunately, he died at the scene.

Kevin Rodenbeck witnessed an accident on I-70 and aided the driver and two children involved in the crash.  He called 911, pulled a baby from the car and comforted the mother by applying ice to her two broken legs until EMS arrived.

Finally, Jade Meinzer, a junior at Edison High School, has helped his school, his community and his peers on several occasions.  In April, he organized a mock trauma incident for students at two high schools involving area first-responders.

Physical Therapy Month

Physical Therapy Month

Move Forward: Physical Therapy Brings Motion to Life

Penrose-St. Francis Health Services is celebrating National Physical Therapy Month during October. Physical therapists are experts in restoring and improving the motion that is crucial to a patient’s well-being.

Because physical therapists receive specialized training in a variety of sciences including  physics, human anatomy, kinesiology (human movement), and more, they understand how the body works and how to get a person moving again.  They know how to manage all four of the body’s major systems, musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiovascular/pulmonary, and integumentary (skin), to restore and maximize mobility.

Physical therapists can help with arthritis, back pain, knee pain, osteoporosis, overuse injuries, shoulder pain, stroke, neurological deficits or diseases, sprains, strains, and fractures, neck pain, balance problems, dizziness and more.

All physical therapists are required to receive either a masters or doctorate degree and are ‘moving forward’ to it being required to have a doctorate of physical therapy.

Physical therapists work to prevent or treat conditions that limit the body’s ability to move and function in daily life.  They can teach people how to prevent or manage a health condition additionally by educating them to help understand how the body functions to achieve long-term benefits.

Watch for trivia questions and more information about National Physical Therapy Month throughout the month of October in the Penrose Pulse. For additional information, visit the American Physical Therapy Association website at www.moveforwardpt.com, or visit Penrose-St. Francis’ local physical therapists.

Lily Oncology Art

Oncology On Canvas

Art Exhibition On Display At Penrose Cancer Center

Lilly Oncology On Canvas, an art exhibition honoring the physical and emotional journeys people face when confronted by a cancer diagnosis, will be on display in the Penrose Cancer Center during the month of October.  This free public exhibit, which is touring communities nationwide, will showcase several select pieces of art from the 2008 Oncology On Canvas competition.

Launched in 2004, Oncology On Canvas is a biennial art competition that invites people from the U.S. and Puerto Rico diagnosed with any type of cancer, as well as their families, friends, caregivers and healthcare providers, to express, through art and narrative, the life-affirming changes that give the cancer journey meaning.

The winners of the 2008 competition were announced Oct. 22, 2008 in New York City.  In total, 26 prizes were awarded to 20 cancer charities selected by the 19 winners in various categories.  The themes explored in the nearly 600 entries ranged from fear, to the loss of individualism, to the support of family and friends, to the memory of those lost, to the perseverance of those who survive.

The traveling exhibition of art from the 2008 competition will tour hospitals, cancer centers, patient advocacy group meetings, and other venues nationwide during 2009.  The 2010 competition, including a call for entries, will be announced in the fall of 2009.

Lilly Oncology On Canvas is presented by Lilly USA, LLC, a world leader in cancer research and treatment, in partnership with the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS), the oldest survivor-led cancer advocacy organization in the U.S.  This exhibit is made possible by the participation of the Penrose Cancer Center.

For information on the Lilly Oncology On Canvas, or, beginning in the fall of 2009, information on how to enter the 2010 competition, please call (800) 734-4131 or visit www.LillyOncologyOnCanvas.com.  To learn more about NCCS, please visit www.canceradvocacy.org.

Living the Mission

Mission At Work-Outs

By Kristine Barrett, PSF HIIP Coordinator

In February, Margaret Sabin, President & CEO of Penrose-St. Francis Health Services, was working out in the gym one afternoon when she noticed a woman using a cane to walk as she used the gym equipment.

Margaret asked her why she was using the cane and Susan Maxwell, PSF volunteer, explained her story about how she was in a car accident and uses the cane for balance.  She was diagnosed with traumatic brain injury and was told she would never walk again.
Susan is a true success as she works out four days a week.

Susan Maxwell and Margaret SabinMargaret, who is also a certified exercise instructor, took time out from her workout to introduce Susan to the BOSU stability ball and show her some different exercises to help with her balance.

Susan was thrilled at her new knowledge and practiced the different exercises learned from Margaret.  Susan explained to the HIIP staff that since her accident, she has tried rehabilitation techniques, acupuncture, and more, but nothing has made a deeper impact on her balance than the BOSU ball.

“Really, it was someone who cared enough to recognize a need and provide service to me,” Susan said.

Margaret lives the mission and values of Centura and is a role model to others.  She recognizes that God has put her in certain places to make a difference and on that day in February she was there in order to fulfill the mission of “nurturing the health of people in our communities.” This is an example of true leadership.

Recently, Margaret awarded Susan for taking care of herself and improving her balance with her own BOSU ball to use at home.  Susan was thrilled and so appreciative of this gesture.

Susan volunteers two days a week in the Rehabilitation, HIIP, and Birth Center departments.  Susan “pays it forward” as a volunteer and in return was “paid forward” by Margaret.  Susan said she uses her BOSU all the time and it reminds her of what is truly “spirit at work.” Margaret has made a difference in Susan’s life and she continues to do extraordinary things during an ordinary day.

Congratulations Susan on your determination to get better and demonstrate that with positive thinking and persistence, miracles can happen!

Thank you, Margaret, for leading by example and making a difference in the lives of your associates and volunteers.
