Star Associate

Star Associates

The Rewards & Recognition committee chose to spotlight the Centura Pillar of Quality for the Spring Quarter 2009. The following associates were recognized by their peers because they demonstrate consistent behavior of integrity by “speaking positively about other people, departments, and the entire organization.”

Star Associate Janice Moschetti
PH Star Associate: Janice Moschetti, Blood Bank (center)
Nominated by: Danna Seats (left)
Presented by: Jamie Smith , PSF Chief Operating Officer (right)

Janice represents the Integrity pillar everyday by bringing a positive attitude to work and reminding her fellow associates that Centura is, and has been, an amazing organization to work for. She always has a kind word for everyone, and her positivity is felt by hospital staff when they come to pick up blood. She finds the bright side of every situation and helps keep morale high in the Blood Bank. Janice is always the first to gently remind others that we are here to work together as a team to accomplish excellent patient care. She reminds us that we should mind what we say out loud because certain words or actions can bring the team down, which will negatively impact the care given to patients. Danna describes Janice as a “world-class” person, and states that the Blood Bank team is blessed to have her.

Star Associate Sarah Scott
St. Francis Medical Center Star Associate: Sarah Scott, NICU (center)
Nominated by: Janet Rae Wilson (left)
Presented by: Frank Thornburg, SFMC Vice President of Nursing (right)

Sarah embodies the spirit of positivity. She continually redirects conversation, approach, and vision to the positive. She is a charge nurse in the NICU and describes her role as one that is founded on a desire to help each member of the staff. She is constantly working with the bedside nurse to help with their patient load, uplift their spirits, and offer encouragement and praise. She will utilize her spare moments to talk with the parents, put them at ease, and help find out what she can do to meet their needs. Sarah also loves the new SFMC, and reminds her coworkers to revel in the beautiful artwork, waterfall, and Colorado weather outside the big windows. She belongs to several of the NICU committees and always has positive suggestions to improve the NICU.

Star Associate Sonovia Jackson
St. Francis Health Center Star Associate: Sonovia Jackson, Behavioral Health (center)
Nominated by: Connie Wallace (left)
Presented by: Hellen Ballard, SFHC Site Administrator (right)

Sonovia sees the good in people even if it is not apparent. She takes initiative, is highly motivated, and is unfailingly kind, even in the most trying situations. She can be counted on to “calm troubled waters” and does so by speaking positively to people and encouraging them to be patient with themselves and with life. Sonovia is great with orienting new associates. She speaks positively about co-workers and management, which helps new hires to feel good about the department and the organization. Connie feels that positive attitudes are “catching” and she always feels optimistic about the upcoming shift when Sonovia is part of the team.

Star Associate Kim Martinez
Off-Campus Star Associate: Kim Martinez, Health Learning Center (right)
Nominated by: Laurine Hennings (not pictured)
Presented by: Jamie Smith, PSF Chief Operating Officer (left)

Kim is always quick to offer help and has the kind of “can do” spirit every employer values and looks for in an employee. There are innumerable incidences of her kind and caring spirit with fellow employees and patients. There was a recent incident in the waiting room at the HLC where the patient was exhibiting signs for concern. Kim was quick to assist Laurine with getting the patient over to Urgent Care where he was evaluated and transported to the hospital. While tending to the patient, Kim was kind, concerned, respectful, and efficient. She has a positive attitude and always makes time to be there when someone asks for help. Laurine often hears patients remark that Kim is a bright and shining star. She is proud to be associated with Kim and knows that she is truly an asset—not only to the HLC, but to the entire organization.

Reaching For Stars

Life With Paralysis

Come hear an inspirational presentation by Penrose-St. Francis volunteer and Rehab Buddy, Brent Kennedy, on how he lives life with paralysis.  His goal is to help health care workers and others relate to people with similar health challenges.

Brent’s presentation is Aug. 12 at 2:30 p.m. in Cancer Center Room C at Penrose Hospital.  This free event will include a question and answer session and snacks.  Anyone is welcome to attend.

Brent, 47, was a dancer, but while building a barn he experienced something called a "spinal stroke," which resulted in paralysis. He has been a paraplegic since February 2004 and a Rehab Buddy since October of that same year.

Brent is a devoted husband and father who enjoys woodworking and is president of the Cripple Creek school board.

Rehab Buddies are volunteers who have gone through rehabilitation themselves and are willing to visit and encourage patients who are currently in rehab.

The Rehab Buddies use their hard earned “credentials” of having had stroke, paralysis, or some other condition requiring rehab, to bring hope to other rehab patients. They have ongoing training and education, and offer valuable empathy and perspective. Rehab Buddies also do exit interviews with patients.

Going Green

Going Green Tips of the Week… Eat Smart.

-For meat-eaters, try adding one meatless meal per week. Meat costs more and is even more expensive considering the related environmental and health costs.

Eat Here and buy locally raised, humane, and organic meat, eggs, and dairy when possible. Purchasing from local farmers keeps money in the local economy

- Watch videos about why local food and sustainable seafood are good.

- Consider eating "low on the food chain." This is especially true for seafood

The Going Green Section of the Penrose Pulse was developed to educate and inform Penrose-St. Francis associates, physicians, and volunteers on how to Reduce and Reuse valuable resources.  For questions or to share a tip, please contact Ann Martin at 776-5111 or by email annmartin@centura.org.
