PSF Associate Wins Good Samaritan Award

Congratulations to Penrose-St. Francis Health Services associate Joetta Graner-Smith, from PSF Revenue Integrity, who is the 2009 SET Family Medical Clinics’ Good Samaritan Award winner.

The award was announced during the Generation 2 Generation Larry R Smith MD Health and Wellness Symposium July 22 at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Colorado Springs.

The SET Family Medical Clinics Good Samaritan Community Service Award is in honor of the late Dr. Larry R. Smith, who defined the meaning of outstanding community service.  This award is a way for his legacy live on in the community. Dr. Smith was a dedicated SET board member who served as the medical director and volunteered in SET’s Family and Homeless Clinics on a regular basis. He also served as a Spiritual Companion to seniors living alone and was an active member of Sacred Heart Church. Dr. Smith was a force for good in the community and SET hopes his legacy and this award continues to inspire others to do the same.

Joetta is a Licensed Practical Nurse who has worked for PSF for 19 years.  She was nominated by Sharon Davis, also from PSF Revenue Integrity, who instantly thought of Joetta for the Award.

“She is always there for those in need,” Sharon said.  “She serves her community in multiple ways, goes above and beyond to give herself to others and is a shining example of a moral compass.”

Since 2001, Joetta has utilized an enormous amount of her personal time and resources training her dogs to be certified and serve in the community in various Pet Therapy programs. She and her dogs volunteered at the Pikes Peak Hospice, Memorial’s Pediatric ICU, Oncology and Women’s Pavilion Depts.

“Joetta is always kind to all she knows and meets,” Sharon said. “There is always a smile on her face, a friendly ‘hello’ on her lips, and a hug for those in need of comfort. She has served her community in many ways over the years.”

Joetta serves as a volunteer at the Rocky Mountain Calvary Chapel and developed a baby items donation program at the church for families in need.  She also walks in the Race for the Cure and the Pregnancy Life Walk, and donates her O negative blood at the PSF Blood Bank.

“I’m very excited to win this award,” Joetta said.  “I thank God for the desire he set in my heart to volunteer. I’m very honored that the organizations in which I volunteer allow me the opportunity to touch other peoples lives.  I pray that by winning this award, I inspire others to volunteer too.”

The runners up winners were Dr. John E. Cunning from the Rotary Making a Difference Fund, and Wade Antener from the Center on Fathering.

Sister Mary Bertha

Obituary: Sister Mary Bertha Kelley

Sister Mary Bertha Kelley dies at age 94
S. Mary Bertha began her ministry at Penrose Hospital

DELHI TOWNSHIP, OHIO - Sister of Charity of Cincinnati Mary Bertha Kelley died Saturday, July 18, at the age of 94 in Mother Margaret Hall at the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati Motherhouse, Mount St. Joseph, Ohio. She was born Lenora Agnes Kelley on Aug. 14, 1914, in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of Joseph B. and Bertha (Cramer) Kelley.

A Sister of Charity for 69 years, S. Mary Bertha entered the Congregation in 1939. She earned the Bachelor of Science degree in nutrition from the College of Mount St. Joseph, Cincinnati, Ohio in 1944. Sister served as a hospital dietitian in the dioceses of Cincinnati, Ohio, Denver, Colo., Detroit, Mich., and Santa Fe, NM.

Sister began her ministry as a hospital dietitian in 1944 at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colo., where she served until 1946 and again from 1948-‘52. S. Mary Bertha worked in the same capacity at the following facilities: St. Joseph Hospital, Mt. Clemens, Mich., (1946-’48); St. Joseph Hospital, Albuquerque, NM (1952-’56 and 1963-‘69); St. Vincent Hospital, Santa Fe, NM (1956-’57 and 1961-‘63); Good Samaritan Hospital, Dayton, Ohio (1957-’61); and Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati, Ohio (1969-’86).

S. Mary Bertha served in retirement ministry at Whitfield House in Clifton (Cincinnati) for several years until her official retirement to the Sisters of Charity Ministry of Prayer. Sister also volunteered as a guide at the Information Desk in the Outpatient Department of Good Samaritan Hospital (Cincinnati). She volunteered at the Intercommunity Justice and Peace Center, Over the Rhine (Cincinnati), as well as helping the Little Sisters of the Poor with parties given by the staff for residents and families.

Sister of Charity Redempta Wittberg remembered, “While living with S. Mary Bertha in Michigan, we lived along the railroad tracks and there was always someone coming to the door looking for a meal. Sister greeted everyone with dignity and respect and never turned anyone away who was hungry.”

S. Mary Bertha volunteered as a dietician in the mid-1980s at St. Joseph Home of Cincinnati. “I remembered her as a very dedicated person who truly cared about the dietary needs of our children. She had many stories to share about her years working in the hospitals. What I will remember most was her gentle smile and the role model she presented to our staff as a Sister of Charity,” said S. Marianne Van Vurst, President and CEO of St. Joseph Home of Cincinnati.

Several nieces and nephews survive S. Mary Bertha.  Her sisters, Margaret Kelley and Mary Rita Jensen and her brothers, Kenneth, Bruce and James Kelley, preceded her in death.

Memorials may be made in S. Mary Bertha Kelley’s name to the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati Retirement Fund, 5900 Delhi Rd., Mount St. Joseph, Ohio 45051.
